As if Krog Street Market could get any better, now it has a super-fresh face to flaunt. Filling a vegan/vegetarian-friendly niche in the market, one stall’s playful menu melds colorful vegetables and bright greens with hearty grains and starches.

Long gone are the light meals that leave your tummy grumbling — the cozy, fine-casual space called Recess has mastered the veg-centric dish that nurtures your palate and your body.

EAT HEALTHY(ISH)

Recess’ menu is light — meaning it’s heavy on the veggies. Yes, they’ve got some standard meat and sea options (top your meal with chicken, lamb, salmon), but all things green and lean are the real stars here.

Chef Victoria Shore (the culinary genius behind ATL faves like the Iberian Pig and Cooks & Soldiers) pulled out all the stops for this one. Breakfast (on the weekends), lunch, dinner, cocktails, lemonades, and a kids menu. You won’t hear your little one refusing to eat their broccoli here… mostly because they get to enjoy almond butter/jam toast and sweet potatoes.

Meanwhile, adult-sized kids get to indulge in a large list of grain bowls, power greens, ricotta-covered toasts, mushroom patty melts, and a wholesome list of sides including curried cauliflower and Zoodle Noodle — specifically that’s zucchini, red pepper, napa cabbage, glass noodle, cashew, and sesame-chili dressing.

But wait, there’s more! Recess has one helluva drink menu. They offer beer and wine, as well as cocktails like a Kombucha Margarita. Though, it’s the non-alcoholic drinks that really shine: Hibiscus lemonade, Stumptown Cold Brew Coffee, and tasty house-made mixes like the Almond Date Shake and fresh Turmeric Tonic.

A FOODIE’S PLAYSCAPE

It will be hard to miss Recess’ fun and playful set-up. The dine-in counter seating is decked out in cornflower blue and cotton candy pink. Neon peach-pink lights bathe the bar, and colorful, surrealist decals hang on the space’s white brick walls.

You can order at the counter, or grab your greens as take-out to carry outside to the market’s picnic tables or to a bench along the Eastside Beltline. The beauty of a Krog Street Market operation is the variety and energy of the space. If you still have a hankering after a bite at Recess, try another one of Chef Victoria Shore’s culinary hits: nearby Spanish tapas restaurant, Bar Mercado. Fitt Tip: they have sangria on Saturdays and Sundays.
