Reformer Pilates studios have taken Austin by storm, likely because these higher-intensity, low-impact workouts are so effective. With technologic and methodologic advancements, it’s safe to say this is not the Pilates you’ve seen in a workout DVD

The burn in class results in dramatic changes in your body over time, but don’t let the reformer/Megaformer equipment intimidate you — it’s easy to get the hang of, and injury-free results might just have you coming back for more to these incredible studios around town.

Tarrytown’s Reform Pilates offers intimate group reformer classes that will take your fitness goals to the next level. Holding to many of the traditional principles of a classic Pilates class, these 55-minute sessions aim to strengthen your core, increase your flexibility, and improve your posture. And for an even more personal experience, you can take advantage of their private and semi-private sessions. Massage services are also offered if you need some recovery after your workout.

Pure Pilates, with studios on South Lamar, downtown, and at The Domain, guarantees a vigorous full-body workout in 45 minutes. They use Megaformers (essentially reformer machines “on crack” — their phrase) as well as incorporate strength training and cardio intervals to maximize the burn. By integrating resistance and counter-resistance, regulars can improve their flexibility, balance, endurance, and muscle tone.

Ballet Austin has some of the most renowned instructors in town — and this doesn’t stop with their dance offerings! They offer a variety of Pilates reformer classes each day in their classy and spacious downtown studio. Classes are offered in a variety of levels and styles — some incorporate reformer accessories and cardio, while others are aimed to address specific goals like destressing and strengthening bones. There’s even a weekly class created just for men who want to master the reformer!

In their charming studio on South Lamar right by Lady Bird Lake, Somaspace’s small-group classes are limited in size in order to offer personalized attention for each student to reach their fitness goals. The expert instructors are well-versed in Pilates, as well as the Gyrotonic and Gyrokinesis Methods, another low-impact, lengthening and strengthening performed on even more patented equipment. If you want more, they also offer private classes, teacher training, and workshops!

Pilates South Austin, off Brodie Lane, offers a variety of reformer classes including four levels based on experience in addition to those that integrate interval training and jumpboards. Co-founded by two Austin women who value empowering community and education, they hire highly-trained instructors who want you to feel your best in your body.

RedBird offers high-tech, customized, science-backed reformer classes at their North Lamar studio. They have lots of introductory reformer classes on the schedule if you’re a beginner, as well as a variety of other fitness classes like HIIT and cardio dance for when you want to mix things up.

If you haven’t already heard, a new Megaformer studio just came to the East Side. The Lagree Fitness Method is unique in that it effectively combines strength, endurance, cardio, core, body stability, and flexibility in every class. They use RAMP technology that allows setting the Megaformer to take different incline levels during the workout — which can ultimately make it harder and better for your body.

Mauro Pilates features state-of-the-art equipment and killer instructors at their Bee Caves location. They are the first studio in Austin to use STOTT PILATES equipment, including V2Max Plus Reformers, stability chairs, Cadillac, barrels, and other small props that will challenge your muscles in a whole new way. Best of all, they max classes at four participants, giving you the feel of a private session at a group price.

With two Austin locations (downtown and Triangle) and lots of packages to choose from, [solidcore] is making it more convenient to feel that burn. Classes are intentionally sequenced to work your muscles to failure in 50 minutes of high-intensity, low-impact movements. As you’ll learn upon arriving, the entire [solidcore] workout is done on top of a resistance-based, patented “[sweatlana]” machine, which guarantees whole-body strengthening.
