There are many different reasons why health-conscious and eco-friendly eaters choose to live a dairy-free lifestyle, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy to do. (Life without cheese might just be the ultimate sacrifice.)
Luckily, the folks behind Rebel Cheese, Austin’s first exclusively vegan cheese and wine shop, don’t believe you should have to give up the foods you love just because you’re plant-based.
After traveling the world, and taste testing vegan creations along the way, owners (and husband-and-wife duo) Kirsten Maitland and Fred Zwar set out to create a purely plant-based cafe based on their mutual passion for animal welfare and the environment. But, if they were going to do this, they had to do it right, which meant one thing was non-negotiable: the food had to taste good. That’s why, at Rebel Cheese, you won’t find anything boring or suspect (read: artificial) on the menu, just a selection of flavorful, house-made eats.
Specializing in 100% vegan meat and cheese boards (complete with olives, house butter, and a variety of fruits), the artisan cafe and market has everything you need for the ultimate charcuterie spread. But if sampling slices of mozzarella, blue cheese, or Havarti isn’t your thing, they will be plenty of other delectable selections for you to indulge in.
We’re talking creative breakfast items like a tofu egg and vegan sausage sandwich, carrot lox bagel with vegan cream cheese, overnight oats, buttery croissants, and a quiche of the day. And for lunch and dinner, you’ll be able to choose from eight different gourmet sandwiches (we’re curious to try the Brie and Bacon on a baguette or the classic grilled cheese!), as well as a handful of soups and salads.
Of course, every foodie knows you can’t enjoy gourmet cheese without a glass of wine (or two). Which is why Rebel Cheese will also provide a small list of sustainably-sourced wines to pair with its European-style offerings, so you can pretend you’re sipping Chardonnay in the French countryside (instead of Northeast Austin).
As if that isn’t enough, the all-vegan outpost plans to offer specialty grocery items that you won’t be able to find anywhere else. Shop while you snack? Don’t mind if we do.
If you’re anything like us and can’t wait to try these mouth-watering menu items, don’t worry. In the months leading up to their official ribbon cutting, Rebel Cheese will be hosting pop-ups all around the city to showcase their new foods before the shop opens in Mueller this summer — just in time for picnic season. Check out their Instagram to keep track of where they’ll be next.
Whether you’re a proud omnivore or devoted vegan, we have a feeling you won’t be able to resist what’s set to be Austin’s newest obsession. Rebel on!
