At first glance, Austin’s lively South Congress neighborhood isn’t missing anything. The charming boutiques, crowd-drawing wall art, and delicious eateries make the iconic street seem entirely complete. But take a second look, and you’ll quickly realize there’s one crucial element missing — a gym!
Well, that’s all about to change because upscale fitness club Equinox is opening its first Austin location in the new Music Lane mixed-use development on South Congress.
With Equinox gyms in Dallas and Houston, we were all wondering when Austin would get to join the party. And so was Equinox general manager Frank Carmona, who has been with the company for over nine years. The Austin-bred GM was thrilled to return to the city earlier this year after the gym franchise revealed at the end of 2018 that they planned to make their way to ATX. Then, it was just a matter of picking the best location.
“It’s easily accessible to residential. We are able to accommodate family types and we are also accessible to the younger demographic, to young professionals. We looked at a lot of locations. And people bike a lot, so we wanted to incorporate that,” Carmona said.
Eventually, they settled on a spot on South Congress that just so happens to be close enough to Downtown Austin to be easily accessible but far enough away that parking isn’t completely impossible. Speaking of, for those of you not traveling by scooter, bike, or bus, there will be dedicated parking deck where Equinox will provide validated spots for two hours for members.
With its high-end feel and roster of elite instructors, you can count on Equinox’s Austin location to have all of the same luxury amenities, perks, and diverse fitness programming that have become synonymous with the nationwide name. Similar to their Dallas and Houston locations, which, according to Carmona, are made in the “urban club” model, you can expect a sleek, thoughtfully-designed studio filled with fitness-minded Austinites looking to get their sweat on.
Because in addition to a cardio floor, this facility will feature a yoga and barre studio, a cycling studio, a group fitness studio, and a Pilates studio, he said. Add in the warm, inviting members’ lounge, fully-stocked locker rooms, steam rooms, and spa, and you can bet every visit will be an end-to-end positive experience.
Carmona, for his part, swears by their high-intensity classes and top-notch barre program. And gym-goers can’t seem to get enough of their Tabata, Metcon, and Ropes and Rowers, some of the most popular classes at Equinox right now, according to Carmona. While all of their classes promise a challenging, heart-pounding sweat, it’s their cycling program we’re especially stoked for — designed without the faint of heart in mind.
“We’ve always had a very performance-based cycling program, but now, we’ve incorporated a more rhythmic program. It’s very digital; you see your stats digitally on the wall, so it’s very competitive and results driven,” Carmona said. We are here for it!
While you count down the days until Equinox finally opens in Austin, you can find them hosting events all over the city, from yoga retreats to group fitness classes at Fareground. This is also the perfect time to get in on the ground floor, as Equinox is currently offering Charter Member Program, which means for the time being, you can lock your fit future down at a discounted price.
Opening day details are still under wraps, but you can bet when we know, you’ll know. In the meantime, the location is currently operating as a showroom, so you can go check it out and get an idea of exactly what you’re in for when the gym opens this fall.
