In a recurring series, we’re talking to inspirational people doing amazing things in ATX’s fitness scene. Today, we’re chatting with Sydney Torabi — Spin Syddy blogger, nutritionist, and personal trainer.
You might know Sydney from her way-to-early IG Live classes, but we caught up with the Austin native to talk about all the important things, like thriving at home, CBD, and how the simplicity of wearing a robe is peak self-care.
My blog was born while I was studying nutrition at UT. I was trying classes at local studios for the first time and realized there were other people out there who were just getting started too.
Once I got my footing, the focus shifted to my journey through nutrition and fitness, mingling to become what Spin Syddy is today.
I wouldn't call it working out. I would say I move my body every day.
As much as I love a HIIT session, my body can't do 110% every day. So, I like to go on walks and to swim. Lately, I really want to play tennis. I don't think I've ever played a day in my life, but this whole quarantine thing has me wanting to try something new. And apparently tennis is what I'm vibing.
I’m a routine kind of gal, but I also like to set boundaries. Even though I love fitness, I don't need to talk about it all day. You know, there's so much more to my life. It’s important to tap into that.
And then, as a typical girl... I’m a fan of Justin Bieber. His newest album is absolutely on my hangout playlist. His old-school "Sorry" album, forever a workout playlist.

I think it would be Diplo. I really like his personality. He’s attractive, competent, and puts out really cool remixes that I vibe to. He’s also very much into cowboy attire, so I feel that on a Texas level, he's a fan.
Social media has gone through so many different shifts, from trying to be super perfect to people being a little bit more real. Right now, it's very much the bandwagon to be your true authentic self. And I'm so on board for it because it's the differentiator.
I never look up to the people that I feel like are so perfect, but I look up to the people that make you say, "wow, they've been through a lot of these struggles, and it's really strong of them to admit that.” For me, it's trying to be as real and raw and social, but with a positive attitude and a mindset.
With owning a CBD business [RESTART CBD in North Burnet], I take it seemingly every single day just for my recovery and mental clarity, but especially on days where I feel like I'm stressed and wiped out from my day.
And then, on top of that, I just find so much joy in being in a robe.
When I go home, like the first thing I do is run upstairs and put my robe on. It just feels so good to be out of jeans and be so relaxed. So, I highly recommend anyone who's stressed after work to invest in a nice robe, one for summer and one for winter. Because having a fuzzy robe in the summer and triple-degree heat is even more stressful.
I take a shot of this green powder every morning, and there’s no evidence that it makes me healthier. It's powdered fruits and vegetables with things like spirulina, chlorella... there's over 20 different things. For some reason, it makes me feel like a better person. So I just don't go a day without it.
Top three things: I always have oats. I always have almond butter. And I always have canned salmon.

I would call myself paleo-ish. I've tried pretty much every diet. I've done keto. I've done Whole30. I've been a vegan for a little bit, vegetarian... Paleo, to me, is the most non-diet diet and makes me feel like my healthiest version of myself without restricting anything.
But then also, I flipping love ice cream. If I want to have ice cream after a long week or go out to froyo with friends, I absolutely will. Froyo Fridays, I call it.
It’s silly, but I make my bed every morning. No matter how late I'm going to be, if my bed's made, it starts my day on a really good note. I'm ready to do this thing. Let's go.
I love certain shows. I grew up loving SpongeBob SquarePants. So funny to me. I don't know why, but it’s one of my favorite TV shows of all time. Oh, and New Girl. I laughed out loud every single episode.
1.) For sure my home because it’s my sanctuary.
2.) Zilker Park. I like how open it is. There are people playing Frisbee, and there are just so many dogs — I love it.
3.) Town Lake Trail. It surrounds the whole city and there’s water along the edge the whole time.
4.) Honest Mary’s. I don't need fancy spices. I don't need meals that blow my mind. It's just real good, honest food.
5.) On a boat in Lake Travis. It’s family-friendly... you chill out... bring your picnic.
Before COVID, I loved going to the gym and lifting weights — whether it was Athletic Outcomes or doing my own workout. But when my gym closed—and I don't have an in-home gym or weights—it was a quick switch from lifting weights to bodyweight only.
But I think my body has responded in a way that feels healthier. It was a kick in the butt, really. It taught me it's okay to get off that track and try something a little different.
And it's made me, as a trainer, get a lot more creative. I don't know how long my six-days-a-week morning workouts are going to last on IG Live. But I’ll do it as long as I can sustain it. It's nice getting those text messages and DMs saying the workouts “kept me sane” and getting a thank you for doing it.
So, it just feels good, and it helps to know that we're all going through this together.
You can tune into Sydney’s IG Live workouts Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 6:30am, and Saturday at 7:30am. She also gave us a seriously wicked HIIT workout for you to try — don’t miss that and more from the local scene on Fitt ATX’s Instagram.
