19 Healthy Food Trucks to Track Down in Austin

Food trucks are nothing new around here, but the menus of this new crop of mobile eateries in town share a certain trend that’s hard to ignore: they’re generally healthy. These restaurants on wheels are preaching vegan cuisine, vegetarian dreams, super-healthy creations, and quality over everything. Below are some Austin favorite food trucks to track down!

  • Veracruz All Natural

Authentic Mexican food is what you get at Veracruz All-Natural’s five spots around town. What you also get are vegan and vegetarian options of tacos, tortas, and quesadillas, smoothies, aguas frescas, and juices (drinks available Cesar Chavez, North Austin, and Round Rock locations). Veracruz tacos are delicious and filling without being greasy and are all wrapped up in a fresh corn tortilla. Make sure you order the chips and guacamole while you wait — theirs is some of the best in town!

  • The Vegan Nom

This truck is a little bit vegan and a little bit rock ’n’ roll. There is almost always music blasting out of the truck window as you pick up your plate of fresh vegan tacos. Their classic vegan migas taco always hits the spot, and if you’re in the mood for something more, try the taco special or one of the signature tacos like Grilled Avocado Reale. Don’t skip the sauce either — they won’t add it for you, so you get to choose between their red and green house-made sauces. Unsurprisingly, Tuesday is the day to get a great deal here — some of the classic tacos are just $2!

  • Plow Burger

Plow Burger grills Beyond Meat patties for every burger, making them one more totally vegan truck! Every week brings a new burger special, like the Banh Mi burger and the Breakfast Benny burger, so there’s always something new to try. You can even get them on a gluten-free bun. Though, it’s not all about burgers here — vegan shakes are always in season! Parked just outside The Buzz Mill on Riverside, Plow Burger is a lively place to meet friends for classic yet vegan diner food.

  • Sundaze

Chick-fil-A doesn’t serve chicken on Sundays, but Sundaze sure does. Sundaze is the place to get fried chicken sandwiches and nuggets when you don’t actually eat chicken. Another truck serving up traditionally non-vegan food but making it 100% plant-based, Sundaze is one of a kind. Their Buffalo Bites are the real deal, and their Spicy Lemon Pepper Sandwich is a classic. Find them on Clawson Rd., right off Ben White Blvd. and next door to End of An Ear Records!

  • The Vegan Yacht

Yes, Austin is known for tacos, but The Vegan Yacht has the best vegan burrito in town. All the meals at The Vegan Yacht are organic, non-GMO, and vegan, of course, down to the burritos, bowls, and specialty Freeto Pie or Freeto Burrito. Look for the Airstream with an octopus painted on it outside of The Four Five on Manchaca Rd. and you’ve found the right place.

  • BBQ Revolution

BBQ Revolution is here to show you just how good BBQ can taste without any meat at all! They certainly didn’t skimp on rivaling their menu to traditional BBQ places either — look for No Bull Brisket, Tempeh Ribs, Mac N Cheeze… everything you’d find at your local smokehouse. Taste for yourself at their truck on East 5th St., and order the BBQ Combo Platter to try a little bit of everything.

The OG healthy food truck of Austin has since established itself as a brick-and-mortar mainstay, but they keep it old-school with their two trucks on South Lamar and St. Elmo Rd. Picnik is your best bet for butter coffee and paleo eats that are corn-, soy-, gluten-, and peanut-free. Try the Trailer Toast (it’s a must) and sip on a butter coffee with brain beneficial MCT oils. Bonus: the menu is more inclusive now of vegan diets than it ever has — the Sunshine Milk and Matcha Latte are both vegan!

  • Conscious Cravings

Healthy, delicious, affordable vegan cuisine. Conscious Cravings delivers on this with hearty wraps, filling smoothies, and fresh salads. With one truck on South 1st and another at the Hangar at Mueller (where the farmers market is), you have two places to grab a quick and healthy bite. And if you haven’t tried the vegan meat alternative called seitan, this is a great place for your first time! The BBQ Seitan wrap will make you question ever wanting to wait in line for meaty BBQ again.

Mediterranean food-lovers in Austin don’t always get as much love as the Tex-Mex aficionados. Enter: Ramona’s, serving  fresh, creamy hummus that is made in-truck daily alongside pita, salad bowls, and sandwiches. You can’t miss their bright yellow truck on E. 7th or traveling around town according to this schedule. And you won’t want to miss their Hummus Bowl with falafel (vegans, just make sure to sub the cilantro mayo for tahini or lemon vinaigrette!)

  • Arlo’s

    image via @nickoutthejams | Instagram

Arlo’s is famous for one reason: their Bac’n Cheeze Burger. Why is this on the list of healthy food trucks you may ask? Every burger, fry, and Chik’n Taco at Arlo’s is totally vegan. That doesn’t necessarily make it truly healthy, but how impressive is it that meat-lovers and vegans alike flock to Arlo’s for late-night eats? Taste the wondrous creation for yourself at one of their three trucks outside Cheer Up Charlie’s, Spider House Cafe, and The Grackle.

  • Doggie Style

In the same vein as Arlo’s, Doggie Style has taken a totally non-vegan food, the hot dog, and veganized it. This red truck on South 1st St. brings you creative hot dogs that rival any regular old dog you’ve had at a backyard barbecue. Of course, they have the Walking Taco (coney dog) and the Improv (with ketchup, mustard, relish, and onions), but their specials like the Green Chile Mac Dog are where it’s at. It’s not the healthiest fare you could find, but it’s the ideal vegan dog fix.

  • Li’l Nonna’s

Pizza brings people together — everyone knows that. Vegan and gluten-free folks can join the pizza party too at Li’l Nonna’s, where every slice is 100% plant-based and the crust can be made gluten free. This pizza truck, outside The Buzz Mill on Riverside, used to be just a regular pizza truck. But, after a one month trial of serving all vegan pizza, they decided to go all vegan, all the time! From Beetaroni to Bluffalo Mozzarella to airy yet crispy crust, they have it all.

  • Bistro Vonish

It’s not every day you discover elevated dining in such a small space. The chef at Bistro Vonish knows comfort food like the presets on his truck’s radio — think Black Garlic Bruschetta and Mac & Cheese. And they serve brunch from 10am–2pm on Sunday! This truck is in Possum Park on 51st St., which is frequently home to vegan markets and events too!

  • Curcuma

This is the truck that brought sweet potato toast and golden mylk to Austin. Curcuma (another name for turmeric, the anti-inflammatory super spice) is a turquoise truck that lives on East Cesar Chavez and serves up plant-based food inspired by Ayurveda (one of the oldest holistic healing systems). Line up here to treat your body like a temple and enjoy every bite.

  • Nissi VegMex

It’d be hard to find a better healthy Tex-Mex truck in Austin than Nissi VegMex. This black truck on E. 11th St. offers taco, nacho, chalupa, flauta, and burrito plates with your choice of sides and vegan proteins. It’s a dream come true for anyone who loved a crispy chalupa plate before having gone dairy-free! Plus, their Hempchata is just as sweet and creamy as the original horchata.

Unfortunately, not everyone’s family is skilled in the process of making tamales. But you’re in luck because the friendly family at Cool Beans might be the best! From the classic tamales to the tacos and nachos, it’s all vegan and organic — no cheese or beef here, just cheeze and soy-free carnitas. Fitt Tip: the Street Corn is the perfect appetizer.

  • Bananarchy

Who’d have thought a frozen banana would taste so good? And since this dessert is mostly banana, it’s “healthy”. Bananarchy has four dips and eleven toppings (including vegan chocolate) that you can mix and match to create your perfect banana-based masterpiece! Or, choose from their specials like The Milly Vanilly (half vanilla dip, half chocolate dip) or the Joe Banana (like a latte mixed with a banana on a stick). There are two Bananarchy trucks in town — one on S. 1st St. and the other at 24th and Guadalupe. Want some? They are open all the seasons that it’s hot out (basically just not winter), but they cater all year!

  • Revolution Vegan Kitchen

Not to be confused with BBQ Revolution, Revolution Vegan Kitchen is a whole different ball game. This is a South Austin Favorite for tacos, burgers, and wraps, which might seem pretty standard, but their variety of proteins sets them apart: barbacoa, al pastor, carnitas, carne asada, and spicy shrymp are all on the taco menu, with even more options for wraps and burgers.
