BALTIMORE’S GO-TO SPOTS FOR VEGAN AND VEGETARIAN EATS

Baltimore is often known for its great selection of seafood, specifically crabs. But, believe it or not, you don’t need to eat meat to use your Old Bay seasoning.

Catering to paleo feasters to vegans, raw food enthusiasts and the “veggie-forward”, there are so many options in Baltimore that fit a green diet but don’t lack in taste! Dig in — you won’t dare to leave a crumb.

Good for both the vegan or vegetarian, Zia’s (in Towson) believes in clean, healthy, and delicious meals. Here, you can create your own sandwich, salad, juice, or smoothie. But if you’re willing to give your taste buds the ride of their life, try the lasagna — it’s vegan, we promise, and made from zucchini noodles, tomatoes, almonds, cashews, and many more veggies. It’s a raw foodie’s dream come true.

They’re kale’n the veggie game inside Remington’s R.House, ask anyone. All ingredients at Stall 11 are sourced out of local Maryland biodynamic farms. Yes, it’s a small menu, but it’s to the point: keepin’ it leafy. The Remington Ruben is quite a handful; a sandwich stacked high with beets, fermented kraut, and vegan thousand island dressing. Don’t worry — no animals were harmed in the making of this deliciousness.

Red Emma’s is a community space within a Central Baltimore bookstore. So, naturally, you’re in the best place to sit down and get lost in a novel. Though, if you aren’t in the mood to enjoy the fantasy world within a book, play a game of checkers or mancala while you feast on their vegetarian-friendly menu. Their cucumber mint salad is sure to cool you off from that romance novel.

Golden West Cafe is a beloved culinary institution in Hampden offering Southwest comfort food guaranteed to make your mouth water. Also, it’s a menu perfect for date night or brunch for the vegetarian in your life. Try the vegan french toast from their takeout window — fresh-baked ciabatta bread dipped in banana coconut batter. We’ll toast to that!

The Land of Kush is one of Mt. Vernon’s quaint cafes (and soon to land in East Baltimore too) that applauds feeding your spirit with soul food. Honestly, you won’t believe it’s veggie here! Craving that rack of ribs but can’t bear the thought of pigging out on that meat? Never fear — we’ve got Kush BBQ ribs that taste just like the real thing! You can also add some mac and cheese (with vegan cheese) and collard greens to have the same BBQ experience as those meat-lovers.

Intelligent Nutrition: a philosophy set to expand the mind and palate. Proudly serving “living food”, vegans and vegetarians can be sure they will be accommodated at Liquid Earth. Grab a juice or a smoothie — they can pretty much make any solid food take liquid form (within reason). But what had us begging for more was their Filly Cheese-Phake with tofu, onions, and vegan cheese. And, yes, you should still order “The Works” like you would if you ordered a meaty cheesesteak.

First, clean up those thoughts. Naked Lunch is the cutest little cafe/juice bar (that requires clothing) serving up veggies galore inside Hampden’s MOM’s Organic Market. Grab a bowl of deliciousness filled with black beans, quinoa, sweet potatoes — the options are endless for you! But don’t miss out on their cauliflower steak; it’s a meal sure to wow you.

Plant- and wallet-friendly, One World Cafe is a haven for vegetarians in Charles Village. In the mood for Italian or Mediterranean? Satisfy that craving with the chicken-less parmesan or the eggplant gyro. Is your mouth watering yet?

Found inside the Natural Market in Timonium, this deli/cafe gets wild with flavor and their take on meatless treats. Natural Juice Bar, formerly The Wild Carrot, really shines with Grilled Avocado & Cheese Sandwich. Heading to a cookout? BYOB — bring your own burger that is, and don’t forget the (vegan) mayo. Fitt Tip: it’s a VERY small space, so be sure you or your guests aren’t claustrophobic.

We donut expect you to remain calm when we say… VEGAN DONUTS! You heard it — you no longer need to travel great lengths for your donut craving. The GruB Factory is a short walk from the Meyerhoff Symphony Hall, offering vegan brunch at all hours of the day, as well as their spin on the Royal Farm’s chicken box. If this isn’t sweetness to your ears, then we don’t know what is!

Okay, Miss America, this is your dream come true! World Peace Cafe in East Baltimore is run by the kindness of volunteers in the community; even the profits of the cafe go to building temples in Buddhist communities. Everything that hits your plate is pure vegan food and you’ll be dreaming of the mouth-watering quinoa meatballs long after you’ve left. Fitt Tip: be sure to check their hours; every month is different.

Paulie Gee’s is the go-to Hampden spot for wood-fired pizza — vegan pizzas included. Their extensive menu includes more than a dozen vegan recipes among 30+ different pies. So, vegans, veg-heads, and eat-it-alls can each find something they love. Chefs make the mouth-watering vegan sausage, cashew ricotta, pecan pesto, and pickled red onions all in-house. Top it all off with their signature chili oil and you’ll be reaching for another slice. Fitt Tip: no reservations at this hot spot. When there’s a wait, head to the bar in back to sip craft cocktails or local kombucha — whatever’s more your pace.

Adult vegan mac & cheese, here we come. If you’re up for a drive outside your usual city spots (about 30 minutes) for some delicious healthy eats, Great Sage’s organic green cuisine is a must-try. This vegan menu features yumminess you never knew possible including a “crab cake” sandwich, flatbreads with cashew cheese, and a pulled BBQ jackfruit stack and sandwich. Be sure to grab one of their scrumptious cupcakes or giant cookies on your way out the door — guilt-free, of course.

Sprout Natural Choice is a quick and casual go-to lunch spot in Catonsville for all things fresh, flavorful, and vegan. Their entrées, salads, sandwiches don’t skimp on portions — that means no 3pm stomach rumble here. They’re also mixing up 100% natural juices and smoothies for a colorfully delicious boost to your meal.
