Among Charm City’s many running groups, there’s one young downtown crew that’s ready to push you to your latest personal record. Knowing teamwork makes the dream work, Faster Bastards likes to race as a team by matching each other’s pace. So they’re always speeding up for that next finish line together.
Run or die
What started with a few friends training together in 2012 was reignited in 2016. Now, the crew has caught fire by word of mouth. Their unofficial motto—ut citius aut mori—roughly means “Get faster, die trying.” And it has proven true for several runners who have already shaved serious time off their PRs.
The group meets on Wednesday evenings at Druid Hill Park for a workout and run. And you won’t want to miss their Saturday Classic: a weekly 10-miler at Canton Waterfront Park. Not to mention, once a month they swap the Saturday Classic route for a “Reddline Run,” where a rotating team member maps out a new path through the city. And, in between marathon training and weekend meetups, boozy 5ks are not out of the question.
Ladies run this
Running with Faster Bastards is totally free. And ladies—don’t let the name deter you. As team manager Thomas Neuberger says, the women are the fastest ones in the group, with several experienced marathoners among them. On top of that, a whole bunch of the Faster Bastards crew is training for the HAT 50K come spring. “Don’t be afraid of the tattoos and the scary faces,” they say. Faster Bastards is a warm-hearted running fam that’s sure to push you to your new PR.
