There might be no better pairing in the world than that of fitness and festivals. And that’s probably because fitness fiends know better than anyone what it means to work hard and play harder.
These festivals are all about maximizing the fun in your fitness journey. From scenic biking to beachfront yoga to healthy green living — nearly all of which are topped off with live music, great grub, and cold brews — your perfect festival awaits.
More than 18,000(!) people gather in San Francisco each year to watch 2,000 brave souls take on this killer triathlon. Starting with a 1.5-mile swim in frigid waters from Alcatraz Island, participants will then take on a super hilly 18-mile bike ride followed by an eight-mile run. They’ll then be awarded for all their hard work at the finish line where a ton of health and fitness products, services, and grub await to congratulate racers on a job well done.
Featuring a full-blown triathlon in one of Australia’s hottest and harshest climates, this festival doesn’t mess around. But it’s not all about no pain, no gain. If biking, swimming, and running through sweltering weather isn’t really your speed, there are still plenty of reasons to take the trip Down Under to this festival. There’s live music, amateur boxing competitions, magicians, bull rides, and a bunch of dance groups to keep the fun going for those not quite ready to take on that humbling triathlon.
Wow, indeed! The Telluride Weekend of Wellness is a weekend-long festival in Colorado dedicated to every kind of healthy living inspiration. There are plenty of classes, like yoga, TRX, and cycling to get you in tip-top physical shape. And there are also a ton of motivational talks by elite athletes, long-time trainers, coaches, and sports psychologists to get your mind as healthy as your body.
This festival is for you, biking badasses! Taking place on a former ski resort in Brownsville, Vermont, this all-levels mountain bike festival is a biker’s dream come true. There are guided rides through a picturesque landscape, expert-run clinics to up your knowledge game, and super silly events to keep you laughing — like adults racing tiny bikes while kids chase them with water balloons.
This festival is, in a word, awesome. And that’s because festival founder, lululemon (with HQ in Vancouver), didn’t hold back one bit while planning it. Festival-goers will start by getting down on an oceanfront half-marathon race, then finish up with a beautiful sunset yoga recharge session. But it’s the post-race party with famed yogis, indie music concerts, trapeze artists, and limited-release local beer that really set this festival apart.
If you’ve long been a fan of the great vibes that only the beach can bring, then you need this Monterey Beach festival in your life. It basically just celebrates everything that makes the beach so awesome — there’s a volleyball tournament, beach yoga classes, surfing, stand-up paddleboarding, open-water swims, and a “splash and dash” aquathlon. The only participation requirement? You must love the beach.
Can’t get enough endurance challenges in your life? Then this festival in Sunriver, Oregon is for you. It’s pretty much all endurance, all the time. You can sign up for a marathon, brave a triathlon, take an easy-peasy bike tour, or take ‘em all on during this three-day event — you know, if you’re feeling particularly feisty. Just be sure not to exhaust yourself before you get to the expo and beer garden where you’ll find live music, local booze, and a ton of healthy freebies.
Asheville, North Carolina is home to great weather, good music, and this free admission family-friendly festival. When we say there’s something for everyone here, we mean it. You can keep the kiddos entertained with a family scavenger hunt, rock climbing, and kids duathlon. And full-grown humans like yourself can get down on Ultimate Frisbee, a dodgeball tournament, and a whole bunch of runs and bike races. Finish off the festival with healthy grub from local vendors to the tune of live music, and what you’ll have is a healthy day well spent.
This festival is so good, it takes place in five different locations around the country — New York City, Chicago, Washington, D.C., San Francisco, and Los Angeles — so there’s no excuse not check it out. What you’ll discover is a super special festival brimming with new and innovative ways to reduce your environmental footprint via food, fitness, and fun. No matter your location of choice, you’ll find live music, a vegan food court, organic brew, and plenty of eco-friendly talks and workshops to help you support this big beautiful world we live in.
Calling all veggie-holics! This Chicago-based festival is one of the largest vegetarian and healthy lifestyle festivals in the U.S. and it’s all kinds of awesome. In addition to serving up some of the tastiest veggie dishes the country has to offer, you’ll hear experts explain the benefits of a vegetarian lifestyle, learn how to cook tantalizing treats from famous chefs, and listen to live music by some of Chicago’s best bands. And if you bring your little ones dressed as their favorite veggie, they can join the kids’ parade and be entered to win a bunch of prizes.
We’ve told you about the 108s, but do you know about the big kahuna(s)? The Wanderlust festival of mindfulness is so fun and transformative that they had to take it worldwide. Held at some of the prettiest mountain resorts our great globe has to offer, Wanderlust features everything a yoga-lover could want. There are unique, all-level classes like stand-up paddle boarding and aerial yoga, a bevy of live bands to croon you into a deep flow, and a ton of talks on everything from personal empowerment to community living. If you’re into living as happily and peacefully as possible, you don’t want to miss this.
The Arnold is another worldwide event (the best in Columbus, in our opinion), but this one’s all about celebrating the strongest and brawniest of us all. Guy and gal bodybuilders come from far and wide to face off in this prestigious event, all hoping to take home the coveted titles of Arnold Classic Champion (for dudes) and Ms. International (for ladies). The fun doesn’t stop there, though. There are also physique and bikini competitions, Strongman, CrossFit, karate, table tennis, and all the swag you can carry, so it’s safe to say there’s plenty to enjoy if you’re not quite ready to compete with the world’s strongest of the strong.
No one knows fun quite like mega-gazillionaire Richard Branson, so we’re betting his upcoming October festival in San Francisco will spare no expense in the fun department. The specifics of the event remain a mystery, but if Branson’s reputation is any indication, there’s sure to be a healthy blend of extreme challenges and unparalleled experiences at Virgin Sport that you won’t want to miss.
We’ll keep you up to date on all things health, fitness and local food in Pittsburgh.
