As the weather warms up in Boston, it’s time to hit the streets once again for all the best outdoor hot spots. You know we boast about the Common, Charles River Esplanade, The Greenway, Christopher Columbus Park, but unless you spend a lot of time running around the freeway, you may not know about Underground at Ink Block.
Just like those mind-blowing, side-by-side Instagram pics that pop up every Tuesday of some new transformation, MassDOT has their very own to be proud of — they turned a highway underpass into a must-visit park. What was once just the unused—and shady in more ways than one—space below the I-93 highway is now a haven for culture, art, bikers, fitness classes, events, and more.
Underground at Ink Block is part of the larger MassDOT initiative to utilize infrastructure spaces throughout the city. Now, in the midst of cars zipping along the highway, people can gather in what very much looks like a parking lot; but it’s so much more. The whole project spans eight acres and comes to life with unique graffiti art all along the walls and bike pathways.
The park itself, which is situated in South Boston, has something for everyone. And we mean everyone — including your dog. The park hosts food trucks, fitness classes, yoga flows, lawn games, activities for children, and a dog park.
With the days getter warmer you can expect more outdoor activities coming to Underground at Ink Block, especially since Reebok is one of the partners who helped develop the space — expect bootcamps, Pilates, and crossovers with Kick It By Eliza. And that’s not all; Castle Island Brewing Co. is opening a seasonal bar in the space coming this May.
Just imagine: You can sweat your way through a killer outdoor workout or find your zen in a yoga class, then sip on a brew and refuel with food from one of the many food trucks afterward. See, there’s almost nothing you can’t do at the Underground.
Ready for your next jog, skate, or bike? Follow the colorful graffiti and it will lead you to Underground at Ink Block.
