Summer is officially in full swing, and like the flowers popping up in the Public Garden, the calendar is bursting with fun fitness events this July. A theme emerged while we were looking at our calendar: unique workout spots. Whether it’s a race that ends at Fenway’s home plate, yoga in a chocolate factory, or CrossFit on the Esplanade, there’s no shortage of cool venues where you can get your sweat on this July in Boston.
Wherever your summer workouts take you, you’re in for a memorable sweat session. It’s time to get outside and enjoy Boston’s most beautiful season at these 13 can’t-miss events.
If you’re anything like us, you probably spend most Sundays in the fall watching Tom Brady and crew throw down at Gillette Stadium. Now you can take to the field yourself at the Finish at the 50 5K and 10K. The race takes place on July 3 and we can hardly think of a better way to celebrate our country’s independence than where the Patriots play. Stick around after you cross the finish on the 50-yard line for post-race fireworks. Maybe throw in celebratory Gronk spike… July 3.
Join 1,000 of your fellow city-dwellers for an off-road race that’s sure to get your heart pumping and your legs churning. The Sasquatch Sprint Trail Race, a 2.35-mile run through the woods, is happening this July at the Middlesex Fells Reservation. This hidden gem is just north of the city; so close that you can see Boston from its highest point, but far enough away that it feels like a whole different world. Party like an animal (we imagine how Sasquatch would) at the post-race gathering, which features local booze from Notch Brewing, Slumbrew, and Bantam Cider. July 9.
Brooklyn Boulders Somerville is New England’s largest rock climbing gym, but it’s so much more than that. From coworking spaces and yoga classes to special events, the gym has a ton going on. And this month BKBS’ rockstar personal trainers are dropping knowledge on things like powerlifting, climbing conditioning, headstands, and mindful eating on Training Day. Get ready to get fit in both body and mind. July 9.
The Boston Common has been the site of many awesome events and now it’s going to host another one: the Epic Silent Dance Party: Global Float Boston 2016. What’s a silent dance party, you ask? Well, it’s when you and hundreds of your fellow Bostonians download the same 90-minute playlist and listen to it through your headphones while dancing along the city streets. If the event sounds pretty epic, that’s because it is. Several other cities will be dancing away the same night, so take comfort in knowing that you’re not alone in busting a move out in public. July 9.
You’ve heard of pop-up shops and dinners, and now pop-up yoga has come to Boston too. PopUp Asana takes “yoga outside the box” with its regular events at cool, unexpected venues. Start with the Yoga & Rose Patio Party at State Park Bar in Cambridge, which combines a one-hour class with brunch and beverages. The Yoga, Chocolate & Wine event includes a yoga class at Taza Chocolate in Somerville, a tour of the factory, and of course, sample some of the goods. Later this month, combine yoga with wine and art at Vinyasa & Vino at the Piano Craft Gallery in the South End. And if you’re up for a little adventure, take your practice on the road for Bend & Sip at the Atkinson Resort and Country Club in Atkinson, N.H. Various dates.
Yoga and running seem to dominate the free fitness scene, but they’re not the only game in town. Starting in mid-July, The Esplanade Association will be offering FREE CrossFit at Fiedler Field on Thursday evenings all summer long. Hosted by Kendall Square CrossFit, this is the perfect opportunity to try CrossFit for the first time or mix up your usual routine. July 14.
July is shaping up to be a pretty great month with not one, but two opportunities to take to your favorite Boston-area ball fields. First up on the tour was crossing the 50-yard line at Gillette Stadium, and on July 23 you can run across home plate at Fenway as part of Run to Home Base. This 9K run (about 5.5 miles), or shorter walk, benefits Home Base, an organization that helps veterans and their families. July 23.
Ever watched The Amazing Race and thought, “I could do that”? Well, now’s your chance with the Boston Challenge Urban Adventure Race. Teams of two or more will take to the streets for a day-long competition that combines challenges for body and brain. Winners get cash prizes and the bragging rights that go with coming out on top. July 23.
Doing yoga on the beach in Boston? Sounds almost too good to be true. But lucky for us, it’s not! Join Yoga Around Town for an hour of all-levels yoga flow at Carson Beach later this month. Get ready to strike a tree pose with your toes in the sand and the sounds of waves gently crashing in the background. Absolute bliss. The event also features a live DJ, free Essentia Water to stay hydrated, and a post-yoga party. July 27.
While the details of this year’s Brooklyn Boulders Somerville BKBDAY are still being hashed out, it’s a given that the event will be one to remember. Past birthday parties for the Somerville rock climbing gym have included competitions on new routes, music, art, dancing, and brews from local beer makers. Help Brooklyn Boulders celebrate turning three at what’s sure to be an epic party later this month. July 30.
We’ll keep you up to date on all things health, fitness and local food in Boston.
