This hidden gem might be easy to miss in Back Bay’s restaurant laden neighborhood. But if you venture down Gloucester St., you’ll find Casa Romero tucked in a corner down a public alley. While they offer an array of Mexican delights, their tacos are a must-try. Take your pick from flavors like steak and cochinita, but we seriously recommend the fan favorite Tacos De Atun. The delicious menu item packed with tuna, sliced avocado, and grilled red pepper is the perfect option for those looking for a healthier handheld that doesn’t compromise taste. And isn’t that why you’re reading this post in the first place?

Need a go-to #TacoTuesday spot? Chilacates is your new best friend. With two locations in Jamaica Plain, these tiny taquerias are known for their simple, yet delicious, homemade corn tortillas. Don’t be intimidated by the line when you stop by (it moves fast) and be sure to enjoy their shrimp and chicken tinga tacos. The carne asada tacos are also a favorite. Packed with well-seasoned veggies, you might find yourself getting back in line for round two…

  • Felipe’s Mexican Taqueria

This Harvard Square taqueria has followed one simple principle since opening in 2004: ingredients should always be fresh and the recipes authentic. Which is why Felipe’s makes everything on-site in small batches (including their key lime lemonade and traditional guacamole) to ensure freshness. Their most popular menu item, though? The Baja-style tacos stuffed with fried shrimp or fish and topped with pickles, cabbage, pico de gallo, Baja sauce, and TONS of freshly-steamed veggies. These healthy-ish delights will definitely hit the spot.

  • Dorado Tacos & Cemitas

Boston is home to some pretty awesome seafood and Dorado Tacos & Cemitas is one of the few local taco spots to capitalize on that. Their chipotle shrimp, grilled salmon, and beer-battered Atlantic pollock tacos are just a few notable items on the menu. The best part? Everything is snack size, so you don’t have to feel guilty ordering one of each. If you’re looking for more land-based nourishment, the spicy portobello mushroom tacos are the move to make.

This South Boston hot spot might be best known for their coconut margaritas, but their tacos aren’t to be missed, either. Chow down on unique varieties like chile carnitas, buffalo chicken, and blackened swordfish, and don’t sleep on the chipotle-lime chicken taco. Just be sure to make a reservation and get there on time — Loco is known to get packed, fast.

A popular dimly-lit tequila bar, Lolita Cocina is the spot if a savory taco with a healthy twist is what you’re after. Taste test their non-traditional fillings like crispy zucchini fritters with hot honey pepitas, radishes, and cilantro and crispy cauliflower with green-chili pimento cheese. And here, Taco Tuesday comes a day early. They offer some pretty amazing deals on Mondays: buy a drink and eat all the ground beef or chicken tacos you want for just $10.

Set up in Central Square, this full-service taqueria prides themselves for their freshness and authenticity. Their infamous handhelds are ground and pressed in-house from 100% non-GMO corn daily. While they are gluten-free, they do contain lard, but don’t worry — vegetarian corn tortillas are available upon request. The smoked tofu taco is a must-have but Naco Taco is most popular for their Duck Confit tacos. Made with sweet potato sticks, cilantro and pomegranate molasses, this menu item will surely satisfy your taste buds.

When it comes to upscale Mexican food, Cambridge’s Olé is as good as they get in Boston. From vegetarian options to seafood and meat (hello, six-hour-braised pork belly) there’s plenty to choose from on their diverse menu. You can never go wrong with the cauliflower tacos topped with spicy salsa negra, charred scallion aioli, roasted chipotle salsa, and handmade soft corn tortillas. Or, give the tuna taco a try. The chimichurri marinated ahi tuna served on a soft corn tortilla pairs perfectly with the caramelized onions, cilantro, chopped radish, and avocado sauce. No matter what you choose, it’ll be worth every penny.

If you’ve ever struggled to find an entirely vegan Mexican joint in Boston (raises hand) Taco Party Food Truck is the answer to your prayers. You might have noticed their shiny green truck around the Seaport, Financial District, Somerville, Chinatown, and Rowes Wharf, but it’s their mouth-watering menu that really steals the show. Their seitan tacos marinated in citrus, as well as their vegetarian tofu tacos topped with seasoned bread crumbs and marinated tempeh, are just a few incredible options to choose from. And did we mention that there’s always a seasonal taco special of the day? It doesn’t get much better than that!

  • Rhythm ‘n Wraps

Originally a popular taco truck in Cambridge, this vegan and vegetarian hot spot recently landed a brick-and-mortar over at Packard’s Corner. When it comes to healthy fast food, Rhythm ‘n Wraps does it right. Everything off the menu is cooked in peanut or canola oils and ghee and doesn’t include additives, preservatives, or alcohol. While there’s a huge variety of foods to choose from, their tacos really steal the show. The Cosmic Tofu tacos, in particular, are a huge hit. Made with crispy fried tofu and topped with kimchi, pears, hoisin, scallions, and toasted peanuts, you’re going to want to give these a try. You can thank us later.

  • The Painted Burro

Davis Square is home to some of Boston’s most noteworthy eateries, The Painted Burro being one of them. The dining room really sets the tone with rustic wood and Día de Los Muertos-inspired decor. But their selection of authentic Mexican tacos are what really make this place stand out. While there’s something for everyone, their vegetarian options are some of the best in the city. Their roasted beet tacos and hot chili and tamarind-glazed crispy tofu tacos will make you want to eat here every night of the week.

  • Papagãyo

With locations in Downtown Crossing and Assembly Row, Papagãyo is your go-to for street tacos that are packing some serious flavor, all of which are served on perfectly sized flour tortillas. While they’ve got plenty of traditional items to choose from (like their Cochinita En Pibil taco filled with pork that’s steamed in a banana leaf and topped with orange-habanero salsa and cilantro), they’ve won us over with inventive selections like their chili tempura cauliflower vegetarian taco paired with grilled scallions, pickled red onions and julienne cucumber.

  • Taqueria El Amigo

It might be small, with only six tables, but that doesn’t mean the food at Taqueria El Amigo is excellent. Spoiler: it is. On top of being easy on your wallet (snag four small tacos for just $8) this authentic taco joint is a haven for flavor-packed tacos topped with fresh-cut strips of whole avocado. Whether you’re in for the carnitas or chicken, make sure to top everything off with their authentic hot sauce. It’s seriously to die for.
