Test Your Toughness at the Savage Games, a Monthly Fitness Throwdown

By now you’ve likely heard of or even participated in an obstacle race. These off-road races combine mud, water hazards, and other stumbling blocks to create a totally unique experience. But maybe even that isn’t challenging enough for you and your crew.

If that’s the case, Brooklyn Boulders Somerville’s Savage Games is likely right up your alley. The monthly event takes its inspiration from NBC’s American Ninja Warrior, Parkour, obstacle racing, climbing (it is a climbing gym after all), and the fitness gurus at BKBS.

There’s no I in Savage

Unlike many other physical competitions, the Savage Games are tackled by teams of five. You can bring your own fit buddies that you run stairs with at the November Project or come solo to team up on the day of competition. The event is sure to inspire some serious squad goals.

The Games start bright and early, at 8 a.m. on a Saturday. They’re not for anyone who’d rather be sleeping in instead of testing their toughness. Once the teams are assembled, you’ll run through a series of challenges in three-minute intervals. Teams are scored on their ability to complete a challenge and aim to accumulate as many points as possible.

So, about those challenges…

The Savage Games include 20 challenges that are not for the faint of heart. Teams will be pushing mega tires, doing 50-foot rope climbs, and tackling parkour obstacles. Since Brooklyn Boulders Somerville is a monster climbing gym, participants can expect some serious climbing challenges to be thrown at them too. These tasks will test the team’s agility, speed, endurance, and at times, even their sanity.

The aftermath

Once the challenges are completed and the scores are tallied, one team will be crowned the Savage Games champs. Winners receive a free one-month membership to Brooklyn Boulders – not too shabby for a morning’s work.

And while this is a competition, it’s friendly, so get ready to party with the best of them after the games are over. This isn’t just any afterparty though. First of all, it’s at 10 a.m. And second, it’s for fitness buffs. That means that instead of your typical beer and pizza, you’ll find super delicious and healthy vegan food from Mother Juice, protein-infused brews from Mighty Squirrel, and other tasty, free snacks.

Not only are you sure to get a killer workout and have some fun at the Savage Games, you’ll get to brag to all your friends after that while they slept in, you kicked butt.
