With diet trends like keto and paleo on the rise, gluten and grains are getting pushed off the plate. But that doesn’t mean the the craving for carbs is any less real, which is why one veggie has become the rockstar replacement for all things starchy. It can be riced or mashed and even turned into wings and pizza — yes, we’re talking about cauliflower.
Cauli-power your pie
Creative ways to use this cruciferous chameleon have been taking over Instagram feeds and Pinterest profiles for awhile, but now the veggie-based crust is no longer reserved for the adventurous at-home health nut because California Pizza Kitchen has officially added a cauli crust it to its menu nationwide.
The crust is veggie-heavy and free from gluten, but not from grains or dairy — it’s made from CPK’s proprietary blend of cauliflower, mozzarella cheese, rice flour, herbs, and spices. You can substitute any other crust on the menu for the cauli-powered option for an additional $2.50. You’ll save some carbs and add some fiber — and it’s the natural go-to for healthy (and trendy) eaters.
So, question: is this plant-based crust roll-out for CPK enough to raise eyebrows from the likes of Domino’s or even Papa John’s? It’s not out of the question. After all, Dunkin’ Donuts is now offering gluten-free.
