12 Reasons Every City Should be Jealous of Charlotte’s Health & Fitness Scene

12 Reasons Every City Should be Jealous of Charlotte’s Health & Fitness Scene

If it feels like everyone you know is moving to Charlotte, that’s because they are! A city booming with business, Charlotte’s more than where you work. It’s where you live. And with our fitness scene’s vivacious vibes, you’re going to want to put down some roots here, too.

People keep coming to our great city—and born-and-raised Charlotteans never seem to go far—for a good many reasons. But these are 11 of our favorites that keep this town in motion.

  • Two wheels is plenty

Food trucks, breweries, juice bars. When it comes to trends, Charlotte has a go-big-or-go-home attitude, and the bike-sharing trend is no different. From Charlotte B-cycle to LimeBike  to Spin, there’s more than one way you can roll around town. Some of them are even dockless, which makes it super easy to hop on and off on your own Tour de Charlotte.

  • Our workout is our happy hour

With a city that is just as passionate about local brew as they are about fitness, it only makes sense to bring the two together. With almost every brewery hosting a run, yoga, or dance class, it’s confirmed: fitness and beer are the perfect pair. Put your jogging shoes on with NoDa Brewing Company’s Run Club every Wednesday, or get in warrior pose in Triple C’s barrel room every Thursday.

  • Take a hike, whenever

If you prefer spending your time hiking in the great outdoors, you’ve come to the right place. Stay close to home with a trek through a nearby greenway, or get a view of the Uptown skyline with a hike at Crowders Mountain State Park. Stop at Looking Glass Falls on your way into Asheville. Or really challenge yourself with a steep climb up Table Rock in South Carolina. Charlotte is within driving distance of so many trails to tread and mountains to climb, the hardest part will be deciding which one to take.

  • We make it easier to eat clean

It’s no secret — Charlotteans are foodies. But sometimes, we take a break from the tapas and wine for something a little cleaner. The good news is there are plenty of options. Juice bars, gluten-free eats, fresh salads — you name it, we got it.

  • Our marathon is one of the best

People travel near and far for the Novant Health Charlotte Marathon, formerly known as the Thunder Road Marathon. We won’t lie; the course is hilly. But the energy and views make the climbs a breeze.

  • We run on… running

The Charlotte Marathon might be our biggest race, but there’s so much more. From the Hot Chocolate 15k/5k to a race that will take you through the Carowinds amusement park, you can don your racing shoes just about every weekend.

  • Brunch is more than a meal — it’s a lifestyle

We live for brunch (especially the healthy variety). Sometimes we want something savory, like the cheddar biscuit at Sunflour Baking Company. Sometimes we want something sweet, like the acai bowls at Rico’s Acai. And sometimes we just want to keep it simple with Flying Biscuit Cafe. With more places to brunch than we could possibly name, the only thing you need to worry about is finding a table. Fitt Tip: go early to beat the crowd.

  • There’s a gym for everyone

In Charlotte, you have your pick of CrossFit boxes, bootcamps, running clubs, cycling groups, yoga studios, boxing classes, and so much more. For help figuring it all out, apps like ClassPass can help you find the workout—and community—you love most.

  • Sometimes we just want to dance

And we don’t mean the kind of dancing that happens at Roxbury Nightclub after midnight. Sure, you could check out the open division dance classes at Charlotte Ballet for something more traditional. Or you could get fit by getting low when your favorite brewery hosts a hip-hop class. These don’t happen all the time, so keep your eyes open and your groove thang ready.

  • So. Many. Parks.

We like our parks like we like our juice: green. And with so many parks and greenways to choose from, you can go for a run, take a meditative walk, or just have a picnic at pretty much any time.

  • We make time to climb

Whether you’re searching for a mountain to climb or prefer to keep things indoors, Charlotte’s rock climbing scene is hitting new peaks in popularity. There are plenty of nearby walls to choose from, but the walls at Inner Peaks and the Whitewater Center are great places to start.
