Step into an Equinox gym and you’ll get hit with an experience that epitomizes the fitness lifestyle. Think challenging classes and personal trainers that push you to perform and—don’t forget—luxury amenities.
Yeah, they have it all. And so does Chicago, because really, what’s hipper than Equinox and the West Loop? Drum roll, please… how about an Equinox Hotel in the West Loop? That’s right — the next evolution in the Equinox brand is coming to The Windy City and it’s music to our fitness-lovin’ ears.
Health-conscious travelers and staycation enthusiasts rejoice. Chicago developer Related Midwest has presented a proposal for a 58-floor building that will include a 165-room hotel, 370 apartments, and, of course, an Equinox gym. Its spot in the southeast corner of Randolph and Halsted would make the thoughtfully-designed building the largest west of the Kennedy Expressway.
Possibly the sign of a new trend, this is only one of the approximately 75 fitness-oriented hotel projects Related Midwest has in the pipeline, and not the first Equinox hotel to break out on the scene. The company’s flagship hotel is set to open this year in New York City, complete with a 60,000-square-foot (!) gym — the largest Equinox gym to date. The second, a Frank Gehry design, is in the works in Los Angeles and is expected to open in 2019.
Equinox’s Chicago digs won’t break ground until mid-2019 with construction set to be completed around mid-2021, which means we all have plenty time to seriously start putting pennies into the piggy bank.
Until Related Midwest breaks ground, the lot will see Boombox retail pop-ups out of repurposed shipping containers and potentially an outdoor beer garden. So we suspect the wait won’t be too awful.
