Nothing beats an ice cream cone in the summertime. Or a pint in the fall. A cup in the… okay, ice cream is good all year round. But if you’re living a dairy-free or plant-based lifestyle, your options are likely few and far between. Well, no longer. Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams just launched an entire line of dairy-free flavors that has even traditionalists in Chicago screaming for more.
Jeni’s already had a good thing going with sorbets—ice cream’s naturally dairy-free cousin—and we’re huge fans of their rotating flavors like Riesling Poached Pear and Frosé, but there are times when a buttery taste is desired. So, ice cream maven and James Beard award-winning cookbook author Jeni Britton Bauer set out to whip up her first dairy-free take on the high-quality treat.
She released the exclusive Dark Chocolate Truffle in fall 2017, and it instantly competed with the OG chocolate flavors. It was so damn good, the geniuses at Jeni’s HQ (or the “Mothership”) developed four more varieties to make your decision even more difficult. Meet the new vegan, dairy-free line up: Cold Brew with Coconut Cream, Roasted Peanut Butter & Strawberry Jam, Texas Sheet Cake, and Dark Chocolate Truffle. Drooling yet?
Jeni’s is known for using top-notch ingredients and focusing on quality over quantity. And thanks to a coconut cream base, they were able to recreate the classic frozen treat without losing the flavor or texture.
It’s no surprise Jeni’s has jumped into the dairy-free game. Global Market Insights reported in early 2019 that dairy-free ice cream sales are expected to surpass $1 billion worldwide by 2024. And Jeni knows dairy has been in high demand. So she blended the past—her proven ice cream techniques—with the future.
“The world is full of dairy-free frozen desserts that are passable to someone who hasn’t eaten dairy ice cream in recent memory,” noted Jeni. “But I have never had any interest in making things that are not truly beautiful.”
Don’t want to commit to a full scoop (or two) of the new flavors without sneaking a taste? You’re in luck. The six Chicago scoop shops—Wicker Park, Armitage in Lincoln Park, Southport in Lakeview, North Wells in Old Town, West Loop, and Wrigleyville—are known for giving customers samples of the different flavors, so you can try before you buy.
But if you can’t make it to a scoop shop, you can always use the pint finder to pick up your favorite flavor at your nearest Jeni’s supplier. Bonus: the entire line is available in a collection and as individual pints, plus they ship nationwide, so you can gift one to a friend or, you know, to yourself.
Jeni’s doesn’t have any plans to develop additional flavors… yet. But don’t be surprised if the artisanal shop has more innovative goodies up their sleeves.
