Cleveland may not have the same mountains and cliffs as Denver or Salt Lake City, but that doesn’t that mean we need to leave the town to find some decent bouldering! A new climbing gym is calling the Van Aken District home, so grab some chalk and get ready to climb.
Owners and climbers Annie and Spencer Richman noticed something lacking in Cleveland: places to climb. Wanting to give Cleveland wide-open surfaces to belay, climb, and boulder, Shaker Rocks was born. But that’s not all: after setting up shop in Shaker Heights and quietly opening in mid-April, Shaker Rocks has more than epic indoor climbs to offer fitness nuts...
The 17,000-square-foot building on the corner of Warrensville & Farnsleigh Rd. isn’t hard to miss. And its massive frame is just as noticeable once you step inside Shaker Rocks: the 40-foot ceiling is perfect for top ropes, speed climbing, bouldering, and more. With so much space—and room for 400 people—Shaker Rocks also has a yoga studio, fitness & training facility, outdoor patio seating, and a fully-equipped locker room. The cherry on top? You don’t need to be a member to climb; you can grab a day pass and rent the gear all in one spot without being locked into a contract.
And with walls varying from beginner to advanced, all climbing veterans and rookies can take classes to enhance their skills. If you’re looking to take a break from rocks for a bit, stretch it out in an hour-long on-site yoga session. They offer four different classes ranging from Slow Vinyasa to Power Flow, plus a course designed specifically for climbers, so you can really work out all the kinks that come with the sport.
To get acquainted with Shaker Heights’ tight-knit community, Shaker Rocks is kicking off with a grand opening party on May 18! Aside from officially unveiling their rockin’ new facility, there will also be food, music, raffles, and some light-hearted competitions (speed climbing, anyone?) to pump up the community.
At this rate, it won’t be long until Shaker Rocks is considered one of the Midwest’s premier climbing destinations. They’re already starting to add more class options to their schedule, and workshops can frequently be found on their Facebook and Instagram. Keep tabs on their website for more updates and future events, and brace yourself: this gym will take your workout routine to new heights.
