While Ohio isn't known for its mountain ranges, you can still get your climbing fix all over the city.
Whether you climb every week or have yet to take your feet off the ground— we’ve found the best places in Columbus to help you master the art of rock climbing and challenge your fitness routine.
Kinetic offers not only state-of-the-art equipment but a passionate climbing community, too. Here, you can attempt one of their many different routes, try bouldering, or hit the fitness equipment to work on your strength. The outgoing and knowledgeable staff at Kinetic will help you improve your technique so you can crush every obstacle at the gym. You can climb for $15 a day at the facility west of the city, but monthly packages are available if you’re hooked…and there’s a good chance you will be.
Climbing is a great workout in and of itself, but Vertical Adventures offers a full-service gym in case your arms aren’t sore enough by the end of the day. When your biceps can’t handle any more ascents, pop over to the fitness center to work on your legs and core. The stars of the show, though, are the walls, which offer tons of different climbing routes and bouldering challenges to occupy you for days. A variety of classes are also offered, including an intro to roping course and a movement workshop for fine-tuning your climbing technique. Bonus: bookmark their website to make sure you don’t miss out on any of their guided outdoor trips.
Pop over to the Westerville Community Center to check out their 30-foot rock wall. Whether it’s your first climb or your 50th, this gym has something to challenge everyone. A sloped beginner's route will give you a nice warm up, but try the full-length crack to really work on those muscles and grip strength. Trained climbing guides are available to help you get the most out of your climb and teach you the ropes (literally), so you can crush the treacherous overhang route in no time. Climbing here is super cheap too — it's around five bucks for the whole day. The Zenith Wall is also available to rent, so grab a bunch of friends and challenge each other to the top.
Vertical Adventures’ bouldering gym near Grandview is not for the faint of heart. By ditching the ropes and padding the floors, this no-strings-attached style of rock climbing will challenge you mentally and physically. Chambers’ 40-foot wall has over 100 routes literally at your fingertips, and it’s up to you to find a way to the top. You can only hang so long, so manage your time wisely. Chambers Bouldering 101 class is free for Vertical Adventures members and pretty affordable for non-members. You’ll even get a free two-week climbing pass — that’ll come in handy once you master the one-minute climb.
