“The System” as it is known is loved and feared among the Columbus fitness scene. Exhausted athletes have been known to curse at instructors but still wake up early to register for the same class again, weeks in advance. Whether it’s Darcy’s muscle shaking High and Tight or Darrion’s manic In the Mix, everyone agrees that System of Strength is the workout you love to hate.

SYSTEM OF STRENGTH AROUND THE CLOCK[ED]

Entering one of the SOS studios (in Grandview or Clintonville), you won’t be greeted with mints or meditative music. Instead, the studios feature large garage doors open to the elements and thumping, non-radio-edited music. Whether you sleepwalk into the 5:30am class or the after-work evening classes, the instructors somehow manage the same level of shocking enthusiasm.

Class starts with a quick warm up and then it’s straight to business. It doesn’t matter if you’ve chosen a cardio-only Clocked workout, strength-based Control, or the Pilates-style High and Tight, every class is intense from minute one to minute 60.

PICK YOUR POISON

Depending on which class you pick, you could be using resistance bands, weights, foam rollers, sliding discs, and other torture devices to reach muscles you never knew existed.

And after a long week of ass-kicking SOS classes, it’s time to wind down with a Heated Ebb and Flow class. The studio’s infrared lights will have you sweaty the minute you walk through the door. Instructors will lead you through a 60-minute yoga class with fast moves and lots of strength-based poses to get the body warm and work out all the kinks.
