If you’ve been around Denver a while, you may have passed by Bill’s Auto Service on Hampden in Englewood. The shop was a fixture in Denver from 1952 until it closed two years ago. And while it’s a bummer to see small businesses close, there are big plans for the vacant Bill’s space. Focused on feeding people rather than fixing cars, Grow + Gather is setting out to be an accessible source of healthy food and a welcoming spot to meet, work, or chill.
As an urban farm, market, and cafe, the name is aptly given — Grow + Gather will actually grow things. The building will have a rooftop greenhouse that makes the most of our Mile High sunshine, as well as an indoor hydroponic farm so that fresh vegetables, leafy greens, herbs, and more will be available year-round. In the spirit of increasing accessibility to fresh, healthy food, the produce from the gardens will be available for sale to the public and also prepped on the plates served in the on-site restaurant.
But Grow + Gather doesn’t just care about the health of its community; they care about the impact its community has on the Earth. So, they’re tapping into our sunny skies (again) to fuel the space with solar power, while also collecting rain and irrigation water for reuse.
Don’t expect a few tables gathered around some rows of kale. The 12,000-square-foot space will also be home to The Feedery Kitchen and Market, a concept space featuring all sorts of local goods, a restaurant, coffee shop, open-air patio, and an event space. The folks behind Grow + Gather hope to foster a true community where you can shop and socialize, gather and grub, all in one place.
Development of Grow + Gather’s facility at 900 East Hampden Avenue in Englewood is ongoing, but the Feedery will open for business on Thursday, December 12, 2019. Keep up with the latest updates and the scoop on their grand opening on Facebook and Instagram.
