A few steps down from the entrance of Brome Modern Eatery in Downtown Detroit, an Australian-style espresso bar called Coffee Down Under is under construction and set to open this spring. After a year abroad in Australia, owner Tarun Kajeepeta came back to The D inspired by Melbourne’s cafe culture and decided to open a 10-seat espresso bar. Besides serving signature Australian sips like flat whites and long blacks brewed with Melbourne-based Proud Mary coffee, the 400-square-foot space will also feature a small kitchen serving the likes of breakfast burritos and pastries.
Now open along the Columbia Street Promenade near the Fox Theatre, national chain Rush Bowls is offering Metro Detroiters smoothie bowls topped with organic granola and a drizzle of honey for a healthy, on-the-go meal. With up to five servings of fruits and vegetables and a max 40 grams of protein in each recipe, a bowl makes the perfect post-workout snack if you find yourself downtown.
