Whether you’re a nature-nut or you just need to escape the city for a while, camping is our favorite way to forget about our day jobs and relax. Luckily, in Michigan, you’ll find everything from “glamping” resorts to long-loved tent-pitching spots, and we’ve rounded up a list of the best ones.

Don’t worry—you won’t have to travel far. Bring your family, friends, and, of course, your pup; you’re only a short drive from your next nature getaway.

Alongside Lake Huron (and just over an hour from the city), Lakeport State Park has over 250 campsites divided into two campgrounds where you can splash in the Great Lakes or build a sandcastle masterpiece. And each spot has its own picnic table, fire circle, electricity, and modern bathroom facilities nearby. This campground has a store on site, too, so you can pack light — grab firewood, all of your beach supplies, and any forgotten camping accessories. Plus, with a delicious assortment of hot food, you won’t have resort to foraging for berries when you’re in need of some sustenance.

With something for almost every camping style, Walnut Hills Family Camping is the perfect place for any crowd. Hang at the beach, play volleyball with your crew, or ride the river — the options are endless. Paddleboat, canoe, and bike rentals are available on site, too, so there’s no need to break your back (or your bank) with those pesky bike racks. Participate in one of the many themed weekends and this 55-acre staycation spot or keep it mellow with your SO (it’s got some serious up-north vibes). Fitt Tip: seasonal passes are available for purchase and allow you to come and go as you please!

Can’t decide if you want to bike, play disc golf, or SUP? Well, Sleepy Hollow State Park has it all… and more. With a very wide range of activities, everyone will be happy. You can bike ride and ride a horse; fish or roast some s’mores by the fire; swim in the summer or cross country ski in the winter. Just 20 minutes north of Lansing, this park offers year-round outdoor activities that you’d be a fool not to take advantage of.

Pitch a tent and sleep under the stars or hit up the Vacation Station and have a camper brought to you. Whatever your camping style, Ludington State Park has all the necessities: swimming pools, convenience stores, games, and laundry rooms. From festivals and art shows to cross-country skiing and snowmobiling, you can grab your camp-crazy posse and visit this park year-round. And with marinas nearby, boating, fishing, and SUP are also options at this camper’s paradise. Plus, you can go to the theatre, visit an art gallery, hike, shop, or golf in Ludington — really, the options are endless.

January through December, Platte River Campground is the ultimate adventurous getaway. Walk in for tent sites or park your RV, but if you want to discover your own, private spot, you can always backpack into the woods. Hike-in sites are available and have room for up to 25 people to explore the Sleeping Bear Dunes and roast marshmallows (and sleep, of course). Alongside Lake Michigan, the Sleeping Bear Dunes combine breathtaking shorelines, towering sand dunes, and an unbeatable skyline. Hike for miles, stroll the beach, or get lost in the forest — whatever you do, don’t forget your sunscreen and your favorite someone.

Camp in style or pitch your traditional tent — Wild Cherry Resort on Leelanau Peninsula offers the best of worlds. Alongside your typical campsites, this resort also has multiple glamping choices. Try one of their luxurious yurts—aka fancy, hut-like tents—or a rustic cabin with your camping companion. Grill your catch of the day or order a hand-delivered wine and cheese platter. Kayak Lake Michigan, experience the astonishing Leelanau Wine Trail, or visit the National Cherry Festival. Fish, bike, or just stroll around Michigan’s favorite city, Traverse City. Whatever you do, whatever your style, you won’t leave camp disappointed.
