There was a time not too long ago when people wouldn’t bother themselves with hectic Downtown Detroit just for an afternoon of sipping quality coffee and enjoying the local vibe.
Now, thankfully, these hip spots are flowing with creative energy and Detroit spirit. As young entrepreneurs flood the city limits, the amount of coffee shops has skyrocketed (these things go hand in hand). Coffee makes the world run and knowing where to get some quality java is HUGE. So, here is your guide to finding your next flavor-filled cup.
This grassroots shop in Corktown is now a highlight of the Detroit coffee scene. With humble beginnings as a pop-up around town, this shop now has its very own storefront in a co-working startup incubator space. The coffee is so, so good and they are especially known for their cold brew bottles (go pick some up, right now).
Birmingham Roast is charming us all. Actually, it is friggin’ gorgeous, for lack of a better phrase. We’re talking modern rose gold decor, marble tabletops, and exposed light bulbs lining the grand ceilings. Instagrammers, you will want to get out here ASAP for their #LatteArt; it belongs in a museum. Order the delicious almond milk latte (a solid choice) and see for yourself. Pair it with their avo toast and call it brunch. Fitt Tip: on a hot day, their kombucha more than satisfies.
Commonwealth is the shining star of Hamilton Row in Birmingham. There’s no question about it — we would drive out of our way JUST for the cortado (espresso + warm milk)! Not only is the coffee incredible, but this space has the whole package: tons of tables, ample natural light, plants galore (our personal fave), and a food menu that is a healthy foodie’s dream. You could easily fuel up on the quinoa breakfast bowl fuels at least once a week because it’s also conveniently situated near some amazing Birmingham fitness studios. So, grab your squad, get in a sweat, and head to Commonwealth.
Dessert Oasis Coffee Roasters
In the core of Detroit, this spot is a go-to for 9-to-5ers and downtown dwellers alike. Although the original location is up in Rochester, Dessert Oasis’s downtown locale has quickly become a staple. Get acquainted with their massive space with high ceilings and pick up the classic Detroit industrial vibe they’re putting down. Our favorite part, though, has to be the live music — you can find local artists frequenting the stage here all throughout the week. Oh, and don’t leave without trying the house-made desserts! Did we mention they were vegan?
Great Lakes Coffee Roasting Co
Midtown’s Great Lakes brings you farmer-direct, locally-roasted, and hand-crafted coffee. You may have to wait a few minutes for your drink, but you know it will be brewed to perfection. There are lots of places to hunker down in this gorgeous, modern-rustic spot — we could spend days here… It doesn’t hurt that they have local wine and beer available, either. Our fave drink? Their matcha latte. It’s one of the best in Detroit. Fitt Tip: you can also find them at Cobo Center, but you’ll need to check the convention schedule, hours vary depending the schedule.
Germack Coffee Roasting Company
It smells like heaven in here. That’s probably because, since 1924, they’ve been known for their excellent coffee AND roasted nuts. Just imagine the combination of those roasting away under one roof (it’s surreal). We don’t blame you if you decide to grab your laptop and spend the day sipping on their fruity and floral Eastern Market blend and taking in the bustling vibes of the Eastern Market neighborhood. Fitt Tip: the pistachios here are a MUST-try. Pick up a bag before hitting the sheds of the historic Eastern Market (aka what fresh produce dreams are made of).
New Order Coffee Roasters
New Order Coffee is a boutique coffee shop in the Cass Corridor in Midtown. And let us just say, it is absolutely delightful. The ambiance, colors, and decor will really get your endorphins going, and the caffeine — well, you know what that does. Here, you have tons of options, and some are super-indulgent (hello cereal milk latte). Not about the sweetness? Pick your type of bean, enjoy your micro-brewed coffee, and call it a day!
Atomic Coffee is the buzziest coffee shop in Royal Oak. It’s always hopping and packed with young, caffeinated minds, and if you’ve ever tasted their amazing coffee and food, you’ll understand why. Atomic is known for their unique lattes and seasonal menu, and our personal favorite is the super-calming lavender latte (the smell alone can mellow you out)! The cafe is light and clean and boasts just the right amount of ambiance, so don’t be surprised if you feel tempted to order a cup, pull up a chair, and get in some good people-watching!
ASHE Supply Co.
If you are looking for the best pour-over coffee in Detroit, ASHE Supply Co. is your spot! The baristas here are super-knowledgeable and take pride in the art of coffee — you don’t get that everywhere. Pair that perfected cup (or unique seasonal brew) with an indulgent local baked good. ICYDK, ASHE carries pies from Sister Pie Detroit, and if you haven’t had one yet, you’re missing out. This modern motorcycle-themed spot sets up in the historic Madison Building right downtown, so it’s a perfect place to stop when exploring Campus Martius Park or after a jog on the Detroit RiverWalk. But if you’re not downtown, they also have a spot in the Rivertown Warehouse District.
Stella Good Coffee
If you know Downtown Detroit, you know the splendor and beauty that’s still intact from the art deco period. Stella Good Coffee, right in the heart of the Fisher Building downtown, is a spectacle in and of itself. It may not be the most spacious of shops (get there early), but the brew is excellent and the building is a vision. For us, it really symbolizes the keeping and rebirth of Detroit beauty. If you can pry your eyes off the decor, you can totally enjoy breakfast and lunch while watching the city hustle and bustle flow by.
Roasting Plant Coffee
A NYC transplant, Roasting Plant will give you a truly unique coffee experience. They have massive industrial coffee machines right in the center of the shop. Picture tubes of fresh beans waiting patiently to be turned into your beautiful cup of joe. We’re fans of the classics here — the cappuccino is one of the best we’ve had in Motown. And while the smell inside the shop is unbelievable, if the weather is nice, you can bring your freshly-ground coffee on the patio and enjoy the amazing views of Campus Martius Park.
The Office Coffee Shop
The Office is a super-cool concept coffee shop in Royal Oak. While there is an abundance of comfy places to sit, you can also rent private rooms, conference rooms, and even have access to a printer! It quite literally is an office and coffee shop merged into one, and we’re digging the creativity. Beyond the amazing ‘amenities’, the coffee is on point. Check out the chai tea latte (iced or cold) and pair the tons of local healthy snacks, homemade breakfast options, and smoothies with the tons of work you have to do.
The Red Hook
The Red Hook—in the downtown West Village and Ferndale—is definitely your eclectic neighborhood coffee bar. It is super charming and comfortable, with mismatched chairs, vintage decor, and mix of cool people all complimenting a quality cup. The best news is they brew the famous-for-a-reason Stumptown Coffee Roasters coffee. Plus, the Ferndale location is also the home of Pinwheel Bakery. So, be sure to snag chocolate zucchini bread… if there’s any left! And yes, gluten-free and vegan options are available.
Another Corktown fave is the super-quaint Astro Coffee on Michigan Ave. Everything about this place is your dream Pinterest board. Feast your eyes on gorgeous florals and a chalkboard mural, then hunker down for a cup made with famous coffee roasters from around the country. Things change seasonally, so it’s always exciting to pop in here to see what’s new. And we’d regret not mentioning that all of their food is organic, natural, and locally sourced from Michigan farms.
Urban Bean Co.
Grab a cup of locally-roasted coffee (or a matcha latte) while enjoying a DJ set at Detroit’s most urban coffee shop — it’s in the name after all. Run in to grab a pick-me-up during your lunch break or get cozy upstairs with views of downtown. Urban Bean is full of eclectic decor and a uniquely shaped interior that will inspire you to get some major work done. Whether you’re a latte-lover or go for the classic Americano — this will be your new favorite place.
