One of the best ways to beat the Hawaiian sun is to cool down with a fresh juice. Luckily, health-minded smoothie and juice spots have become more and more popular in Honolulu over the past few years, and we’ve got the inside scoop on the best ones in town.
With locations in Kaimuki, Hawai'i Kai, and Aina Haina, Leahi Health is undoubtedly one of the healthiest spots in Honolulu. They brew their own kombucha, exclusively use local organic Hawaiian ingredients, and always have good vibes. Their smoothie list is extensive, too, with 18 different combinations to choose from. Pair your smoothie with one of their nutrient-rich salads or naan tacos (all vegetarian) and get the power boost you need to take full advantage of everything the day has to offer.
HiBlend can be found both in the center of town off Keeaumoku St. and also further inland in Wahiawa. They boast farm fresh, organic, local, and non-GMO ingredients in all their delicious smoothies and juice. Get a taste from the Detoxinator smoothie with cleansing kale, cilantro, and mint, or the Turmenator smoothie with anti-inflammatory ingredients like honey and turmeric. HiBlend also offers a selection of health “shots” to go along with your smoothie or meal, including a “shot sampler” with three different types of freshly juiced concentrated concoctions. Each one focuses on different healthy aspects, like aids for digestion, boosts of antioxidants, and detoxification.
Lanikai Juice offers a huge list of options across seven different locations throughout Oahu. Drinks have fun Hawaiian-themed names like Lanikai Splash and Strawberry Shaka. Though, for an energy boost, try the Kailua Monkey with banana, organic nut butters, vegan protein, and honey. Lanikai has been making juice and smoothies on the island for over 20 years, and number of awards this company has received speaks for itself, including one for green business. That’s a win for your belly and the environment.
A popular pit stop for local surfers looking to grab some fuel after a surf session, Da Cove Health Bar specializes in acai berry and traditional Hawaiian ingredients like kava and pa’i ’ai. With the famous Diamond Head Crater in the background, their original shop is the perfect place to visit before or after hiking Diamond Head State Park or surfing at Diamond Head Beach. However, they also have a prime location in Kapolei. Whichever you visit, you'll enjoy smoothies made with fresh local fruit and offer a healthy selection of additions like bee pollen, spirulina, chia seeds, and maca root.
Setting up in the up-and-coming and always artsy Kaka’ako district of Honolulu, Juicd Life offers an eclectic array of organic juices. Everything is raw and cold-pressed right there in the shop using their hydraulic press so that every last nutritious enzyme ends up in the bottle. They have simple solutions like Absorb with carrot, ginger, and apple. Or, try their Midnight Detox with lemon, alkaline water, agave, cucumber, cayenne, and activated charcoal. And if none of their daily pre-made juices strike your fancy, you can create your own and the staff will press the ingredients right there to order.
Bluetree has incredibly high standards when it comes to your health. They never use GMOs, always source locally and organically as often as possible, and even bottle their products in glass rather than plastic to avoid pollution. In addition to their cafe location on Kapiolani Ave. serving coffee, cold-pressed juice, health elixirs (like kombucha), and remedy shots, Bluetree also offers juice cleanse programs ranging from beginner renewing cleanses to advanced alkaline cleanses.
If you’re willing to brave the hordes of tourists in Waikiki or find yourself on the North Shore, make sure you stop by Sunrise Shack. Founded by four surfers in 2016, the Shack believes that food should fuel our bodies to aid in everything from mental concentration to metabolism. Just look at the menu to see what they mean! Their smoothies and “smoothie bowls” are entirely Instagram-worthy and all made with local superfoods. Their bullet coffee is made with grass-fed butter and high-quality organic coffee beans. Want them to whip up something cold? The Blue Dream combines banana, mango, coconut, almond milk, raw honey, and blue algae to create a sky-blue colored masterpiece. And if you favor a spoon to a straw, The Jungle Matcha Bowl blends Japanese matcha powder, coconut, and kale.
Who says you can’t stay healthy while shopping? Blue Hawaii Lifestyle, within Ala Moana Center (Hawai'i’s largest mall), is known for their acai bowls, but they also offer a healthy selection of juices and smoothies. The mantra here is all organic, natural, and fresh, with two pounds of quality produce inside every bottle of juice. A fun take on the traditional Lava Flow drink, they offer a smoothie blend of coconut and pineapple with a goji-strawberry puree. If you ask us, high-quality organic products paired with the positivity of skipping that soda at the mall is a recipe for a good day.
Tropical Tribe gained popularity when it became one of the first spots on the island to offer an authentic Brazilian-style acai blend. They went from selling acai bowls from a small lunch wagon to a store in the busiest area of Waikiki within a year and have shown no signs of slowing down. Their Tropical Acai Smoothie blends acai berry, guarana berry juice (an important ingredient that makes it authentically Brazilian), a variety of tropical fruits, and organic honey. Or you can grab their famous acai bowl and top it with coconut shreds, bee pollen, chia, or raw cacao, all of which are organic.
The fresh, cold-pressed juices at Pressed Juicery certainly pack in a punch. It’s a mainland company, but the high praises that this place has received make it more than worth a mention now that they’ve opened a location in Honolulu. They offer cleanses aimed to aid in digestion, weight loss, and detoxification. Plus, the green juice options contain antioxidant-rich ingredients like kale, spinach, ginger, parsley, cucumber, and cayenne, guaranteed to give you a natural energy boost. But what really sets this place apart from the rest is their plant-based soft serve (“freeze”), made with natural ingredients free from dairy and processed sugar. It’s the perfect healthy treat to satisfy your sweet tooth without sacrificing nutrition.
