Houston may be known as a meat-eater’s paradise, but look beyond the BBQ and burger joints and you’ll discover an international mecca of vegetarian cuisine. Surprised? You shouldn’t be.

When it comes to food, Houston definitely knows how to bring it — and vegetarian cuisine is no exception. Whether you’re totally plant-based, vegan, or simply reducing your meat intake a tad, these veggie-loving restaurants and food trucks around town will hit the spot.

Local Foods

With five locations across Houston (Rice Village, Upper Kirby, Downtown, Tanglewood, and The Heights), fresh sandwiches and salads are never too far away. And with a wide menu offering, from veggie burgers and falafel sammies to organic roast beef (obviously, not vegan), vegetarians and meat-eaters can commingle in this trendy gourmet deli. Fitt Tip: you’ll find the most extensive list of vegan offerings at their Kirby location.

Indian fusion is what’s on tap at this culinary innovator and Houston favorite with a restaurant in River Oaks, the Bakeshop + Lab above the eatery, and a museum cafe within Asia Society Texas Center. With vegetarian offerings and vibrant flavors at every meal (breakfast, lunch, and dinner), eating here is never boring. And don’t miss every second Saturday of each month, when they donate 50% breakfast sales from 8am to noon to a featured non-profit!

Verdine had humble beginnings — it was formerly a sole food truck operation by a food blogger. But that food truck, Ripe Cuisine, just happened to be a goldmine of delicious vegan food like Jackfruit Carnitas Tacos (without the actual carnitas), as well as creative dishes and flavor explosions. And Verdine’s new brick-and-mortar in The Heights will have the same (but more) amazing globally-inspired plant-based food, plus wine and beer.

Eating veg only is easy at Uptown’s True Food Kitchen (they also have a spot in The Woodlands). Like their name implies, they only serve true, whole foods. While they have grass-fed beef and fresh fish on the menu, you’ll also find a plethora of creatively healthy plant-based dishes like Spaghetti Squash Casserole and T.L.T. (tempeh, lettuce, tomato) sandwich that’ll make your mouth water!

Craving Texan comfort food but eliminating meat from your diet? Look no further than green seed vegan. This food truck turned vegetarian restaurant on Almeda serves up vegetarian versions of your favorite cheat meals, like The Tex (veggie take on a bacon cheeseburger) and Cauliflower Nuggets.

Embrace the local culture of Houston’s Historic Third Ward at this coffeehouse and community gathering place. The completely vegetarian menu takes inspiration from Houston’s cultural diversity, serving up everything from curries and Creole dishes to hearty chilis. And, brewing locally roasted Greenway coffee, you’ll want to sip and stay awhile.

Bring your appetite to this all-vegan Indian buffet in Oak Forest. Govinda’s is an absolute gem, offering affordable, flavorful, and fresh food — and being that it’s a buffet, the portion sizes are up to you. Not only do they please vegans and non-vegans alike, but the majority of their rotating menu is gluten-free!

Hello, vegan goodness! You may have seen Pat Greer’s kombucha or “kookies” at local juice bars or Whole Foods, but a trip into the Montrose kitchen itself is totally worth it. The raw, plant-based menu rotates daily, and you better save room for Pat’s desserts, all made with love (and it shows).

This isn’t a restaurant per se, but hey, vegans deserve sinful desserts too! And they’re so decadent, you’d never know they’re all vegan. Baking up cookies, pies, cupcakes, and more, you can indulge in Sinfull Bakery’s goods at coffee shops, taco shops, and local grocery stores around town.

When you think ‘buffet’, you don’t normally think healthy. But Pepper Tree is here to change that. This Greenway 100% home-style vegan Asian food buffet contains no MSG. And the menu includes all your Chinese takeout staples—focusing on fresh ingredients and simple recipes—can be adjusted for dietary needs.

Hungry's

Restaurant

Hungry’s has been serving the Houston community market-fresh fare for more than 40 years in both Rice Village and on Memorial Dr. Their vegan features rotate daily, but their signature Michelada is the perfect way to Sunday Funday after your run date.

Chuy's

Restaurant

The Tex-Mex joint planted roots in 19 states but, by far, its most extensive list is in Texas, with 10 perfectly placed spots to chip and dip. And while their menu isn’t strictly vegan or vegetarian, we wanted to give you an option at a spot many Houstonians call their favorite taco fix. So, before you polish off a plate of sopapillas, put in an order for their guacamole tacos.
