Donuts, gelato, and egg rolls. That may sound like an unlikely combo, but at Vegan Donut & Gelato in West Houston, it makes the perfect trifecta. The best part? They’re all vegan.
If you’re looking to start your day with the iconic breakfast item (a donut, ICYMI), you’ll want to make a pit stop at Vegan Donut & Gelato. Walk into the shop and you’ll be met with the smell of fresh donuts, a glass case displaying the usual suspects (think: glazed, sprinkled, sugared, you name it), and the glow of fluorescent lights — familiar senses that’ll make you nostalgic for your favorite childhood donut spot.
Just be prepared to face major indecisiveness when choosing between their traditional and unique array of options. They’re serving up varieties like the bear claw (a pastry similar to a Danish that resembles a bear’s claw), chocolate swirl, and apple fritter, along with noteworthy Fruity Pebble-topped and lemon-filled donuts. But so far, the fan favorite has been the kolache (aka a Tex-Czech pastry with various fillings that has reached cult status in Texas) stuffed with jalapeños and vegan cheese.
And what are donuts without some good ol’ coffee to wash them down (or dip them into)? Luckily, they’ve got that, too, and organic at that.
While donuts may rule the menu, their other tasty, albeit unexpected, handhelds are worth mentioning. Still craving something sweet? Do yourself a favor and grab a gelato, then balance out the confections with a savory egg roll or spring roll. With every menu item at $6 or less, you can treat yourself to one of everything without breaking the bank.
Word on the street is that the folks at Vegan Donut & Gelato are experimenting with new flavors and items (vegan hot dog donut, anyone?), so be sure to follow their Facebook page to see what they’re cooking up. Or, just drop in any day of the week from 6am to 3pm to check it out firsthand and get first dibs.
Tucked away in a strip mall at the intersection of Clay Rd. and Jura Drive, Vegan Donut & Gelato may be easy to miss. But, trust us — it’s worth the stop.
