Ever hear that everything’s bigger in Texas? Well, that holds true when it comes to brunch, and we are not at all mad about it.
Sure, Houston’s known for its barbecue and Tex-Mex, but this city really loves to brunch, too. So, if you’ve taken advantage of the weekend and slept your way past breakfast — that’s quite alright! Because brunch in H-Town is the perfect complement to a slow, Saturday (or Sunday) morning. And now that local eateries offer healthy brunch options, you can go bigger (without the guilt). The way we see it: work hard, brunch hard.
Weights + Measures
This Midtown hotspot knows how to do a boozy brunch. You may come for the tasty brunch menu—featuring creatively healthy dishes like Oaxaca Scramble (with plenty of bacon and salsa) and Mushroom Toast—but you’ll definitely stay for the brunch cocktails. Quench your thirst with a Spicy Michelada or bloody mary. Fitt Tip: order a bottle of bubbly and get a carafe of OJ on the house!
Tucked away on a backstreet (nope, the restaurant isn’t named after your favorite boy band) in between Shepherd and West Grey, Backstreet Cafe is so cozy you’ll want to move in. The menu is extensive, so it’s easy to get overwhelmed, but take your time or lean on us for some healthy suggestions — like the Roasted Carrot and Avocado Salad or Grilled Salmon Bowl. If you’re in the mood for something toasted, choose between house-cured salmon, avocado, or almond toasts.
The Kitchen at The Dunlavy
Okay runners and cyclists, this one is for you (at least from a convenience standpoint). As the only restaurant right on the banks of Buffalo Bayou, The Kitchen at The Dunlavy is ideal for a post-workout brunch. Enjoy healthy delicacies like egg white or avocado toast or stick with a breakfast bowl. Then, when you’re done brunching, walk it off along the bayou or catch a yoga class across the street at BIG Power Yoga.
If you’ve been around the Houston brunch block, chances are, you’ve heard about Barnaby’s Cafe. With eight different locations, this city favorite is a go-to spot for a healthy brunch. You can’t go wrong with the hearty and protein-packed Buffalo Scramble. Order a grapefruit juice to go along with it for the perfect pairing.
Finish your run along Heights Blvd. and head straight to Revival Market (on the same street) for brunch with friends. Featuring fresh ingredients and a specialty breakfast menu until 11am, it’s great for post-workout noms. Order the Avocado Toast or Steel Cut Oatmeal to keep it healthy and try a Horchata Latte for a twist on your traditional coffee drink!
You’ll want to head to Tout Suite in East Downtown (or their new location in Memorial City Mall) for epic noms. We recommend diving into the TS Toast Series — allowing you to choose between avocado, salmon, or mushroom. Or if you can’t choose (and why should you?), get the sampler of all three. Changing courses (get it?), the acai or pitaya bowl is another favorite for a lighter brunch choice, and coffee is an absolute must. Don’t forget to order a macaron or cupcake to-go! If you take it with you, it still counts as a healthy brunch, right?
When a restaurant opens in Houston and then sets up a sister in Manhattan (instead of the other way around), you know it must be good. This Indian fusion restaurant serves up something tasty for every meal of the day, but with spiced coffees and fresh pastries on the regular, brunch is extra special. For those on a brunch budget, the Famous Five (five menu items for $5) is your ticket to breakfast bliss. Bonus: Pondi is in the same shopping center as Revolution Studio, a boutique cycle and yoga studio. So you can earn your brunch with a fierce hustle and flow.
True Food Kitchen
True Food Kitchen in the Galleria area has healthy eating down pat, but they aren’t afraid to get a little wild with seasonal ingredients and unique, flavorful dressings. Order up an organic, veggie-heavy entrée like the Garden Scramble with a fun brunch cocktail like the Honey & Grapefruit Mimosa. We’ll cheers to that!
Consistently ranked one of the top picks for breakfast and brunch in Houston, this refreshing farm-to-table eatery needs no introduction. From a mouth-watering Pork Belly Hash to irresistible breakfast tacos, Dish Society’s menu features distinct, locally-sourced, and super flavorful options for everyone. And with three locations in different parts of town (Katy’s Cinco Ranch, the Galleria, and Memorial), you’re never too far from a satisfying meal!
The patio at Brasil is a fave for Houston’s brunch community, and at the corner of Dunlavy and Westheimer in Montrose, it’s great for people watching, too! Though, you’ll probably only have eyes for your plate once it arrives. We love the variety of options, especially the menu items with a little extra Texas flavor, like the Tamales & Eggs. Just remember to check out the chalkboard for the daily specials while you’re waiting in line!
