When it comes to healthy eats, London is bursting with options. From plant-based to organic, paleo and keto, there’s something for every preference you can think of.
But, there’s no point loading your plate with better-for-you foods if you wash it all down with unhealthy drinks, is there? That’s where Squeg + Bonez comes in. The eatery opened in Hackney in June 2019, and it’s offering up plant-based eats alongside specialty coffee and natural wine.
Founded by lifelong friends Holly O’ Leary and Alice Harry, the quirky spot is getting a lot of attention for its unique take on plant-based dining. During the day, Squez + Bonez serves up the very best single-origin coffee, carefully paired with plant-based sweet treats. And once the sun goes down, they roll out a full menu of small plates and bio-dynamic (organic and all-natural) wines.
Take a look at what’s on offer and you’ll find everything from Sesame Toast with Plum Sauce to Pickled Mushroom Dumplings to whet your appetite. If sweets are more your thing, you have to try the Miso Sticky Toffee Pudding or Sparkling Rosé Strawberries Burnt Cream. And because Squeg + Bonez only uses seasonal vegetables, their selections are always changing, which means you’ll be spoilt for choice any time you stop by the Hackney café.
Wondering what Squeg + Bonez actually means? You’re not alone. It turns out, the answer is pretty simple.
Co-founder Holly told Fitt: “Those are our nicknames — Alice is Squeg and I’m Bonez.”
It’s not just about nicknames, though. The playful name is also a nod to having fun — something the East London eatery is all about. Step into Squeg + Bonez and you’ll see what we’re talking about. The walls are splashed with bright illustrations, playful artwork, and funny quotes, and it’s all created by Alice, who is also an artist (how’s that for a double threat?!). Add to the mix a tasty menu that’s good for you and the planet, and you’ve got more than a few reasons to love this healthy hot spot.
The only thing that’s missing from this awesome new hangout is a full daytime menu. But guess what? Alice and Holly are one step ahead. The pair plan to launch a breakfast and weekday lunch menu this summer, so keep up with them on their Instagram for updates.
