High Mood Food is a refreshing find in London. Famous for its ferments, veggie-centric attitude and mindful menus, it’s attracting people city-wide and, particularly, those who give a damn about their food and their time — it’s slow food, fast.

Founding duo Ursel Barnes and Joey O’Hare have combined their diverse backgrounds (one former finance professional and one former MasterChef contestant) to cook up something really rather excellent. Who knew you could get so excited about fizzy food?

FERMENTATION FACTS

That fizziness is called effervescence and it’s essentially good bacteria breaking down the food that is being fermented. It’s healthy in two ways: fermented food is FULL of vitamins and minerals and, secondly, these good bacteria breaking it down are warmly welcomed into your gut biome.

Ursel and Joey know all there is to know about gut flora too. They’ve created a menu which concentrates on increasing gut health and, subsequently, general all-round well-being in the most nutritious and delicious ways.

LIVING FOOD

Live bacteria is the crux of the menu. Every menu item has either an element or a theme of fermentation, from Kultured Toasties with biotic slaw to a Kale Seaweed Caesar with sourdough croutons and coconut bacon. They’re also wonderfully experimental, meaning that you’ll find such things as ‘activated dukka’ (an Egyption spiced nut mix and condiment) on the menu.

But like all good things, it’s an entirely holistic approach. When you buy your chia pudding pot in the morning with red berry compote, activated nuts, and homemade vanilla powder, you’re actively encouraged to return the jar to save on waste… and also give you an excuse to return tomorrow. And the next day. And every day to come. (They’re honestly that good).

AND LIVING DRINKS!

Unsurprisingly, High Mood Food also sells kombucha. This sweetly sugar-free, probiotic and faintly vinegary marvel is gaining popularity in London, following its quick fame in Australia and the US. Also good for your gut and gratifyingly gluten-free, low-carb, and sometimes even paleo are their range of cold pressed juices including the popular ROUGE: apple, beetroot, ginger, lemon, and aloe vera.
