Ever thought the day would come where you could dine on delicious vegan food while you’re sipping on vegan beer in a London pub? It may not have crossed everyone’s mind, but today could be THAT day.
The Spread Eagle in East London (no surprises there!) was the first London pub of its kind, and needless to say, it has been a hit! Not only is everything served behind the bar and on the menu totally suitable for vegans, but everything used to make the furniture and decor is too.
The friendly pub is all about good vibes, and it’s easy to get swept up in it all. With the sleek midnight blue and copper accents, the weighty, fully-stocked central bar, and mellow beats playing, you’ll never want to leave. There’s also a beer garden out the back for those warmer summer days.
The décor is the icing — the food and drinks menu is the cake. The menu is full of Mexican-influenced food by street food star Club Mexicana. The reason we say “influenced” is because those of us who enter pub and instantly want a burger and fries can still nab just that, which isn’t exactly a Mexican cuisine staple. But The Spread Eagle aims to please no matter what you like. The “tofish” burger with vegan tartar sauce is a must-try, and the Mexican deep-fried ice-cream with chilli chocolate is basically a non-negotiable for dessert.
If that’s not enough to tempt you, the smoky jackfruit tacos, Californian-styled battered tofish and chips served in a burrito, or Mexican Fried Chicken torta drowned in vegan chipotle mayonnaise surely is.
And it wouldn’t be a pub if there wasn’t a fully stocked bar — the Spread Eagle is no exception. All wines and 16 different beers on offer are animal-friendly (note: some beers and wines use animal products in their creation). Speaking of animal-friendly, did we mention the bar is dog-friendly?
The pub is open from 4pm–11pm weekdays and noon till 2am on Friday and Saturday nights, when a DJ will be on the tables till late. Club Mexicana rules the kitchen from Wednesday through Sunday. Ready to experience it for yourself? It pays to book, as the place packs out with hungry Hackney herbivores.
