It’s no secret LA is known for its countless juice bars and healthy restaurants. But perhaps unbeknownst to the more health-conscious Angeleno, it’s also where you can find some of the best stacks of pastrami around.

And if you’re a plant-based-eater, you’re in luck because vegan deli Counterpart is shaking up the LA food scene with meatless takes on your favorite sandwiches.

ECHO PARK ADDITION

Sitting on the corner of Echo Park Ave. and Delta St. in Echo Park, Counterpart is where the corner deli meets the trendy, modern cafe. Stop in and you’ll find burnt orange leather booths that invite staying awhile and good ol’ conversation, as well as black and white accents, walls lined with plants, and hanging lights that serve as art as much as function. While the setting alone is attention-grabbing, their reimagined deli classics are the real draw.

VEGAN PLAYS ON DELI CLASSICS

You really can’t go wrong with any of their sandwich selections, but the clear winners are the Hot Pastrami—a you-won’t-miss-the-actual-thing handheld piled high with seitan pastrami, purple sauerkraut, russian dressing, vegan swiss, and alfalfa sprouts—and the Jackfruit Chicken Salad, a creation so delicious you’ll forget your meal is missing the meat. Their take on the ultimate hangover breakfast staple (the burrito, ICYMI) is another standout. It hits the spot with a combo of plant-based scrambled egg, fingerling potato, seitan bacon, chimichurri, and house hot sauce. And if you’re the type who loves breakfast for dinner, we’ve got more good news— their brekkie menu is served all day. If you’re just popping in for a snack, be sure to order their can’t-miss Cauliflower Mac N’ Cheese made with gluten-free elbow pasta, cashew cheese sauce, and roasted cauliflower.

The best part? They make all of their plant-based meats in-house and, just like traditional delis, sell them by the pound (midnight snack, anyone?).

At Counterpart, their goal is to create plant-based alternatives that capture both the smoky flavors and the juicy textures you’d expect when biting into a traditional, meat-filled deli sandwich — and we’d say they nailed it.
