Plant-based food and beer are becoming quite the dynamic duo in LA. First came The Dankness Dojo, a vegan brewery and restaurant in DTLA. And now we have a plant-based German beer hall on the 4900 block of York in Highland Park.
Meet Hinterhof, your new favorite place to grab a beer, eat some plant-based German food, and hang out with friends. Think of it like an animal-friendly version of Oktoberfest.
When you raise a stein here, expect it to be accompanied by vegan German comfort food — from wienerschnitzel made with a seitan cutlet to vegan bratwurst and, of course, a hot pretzel with German mustard. All vegan versions of traditional German dishes are house-made (a major win), and the menu was developed in collaboration with a vegetarian German chef — so count on anything you order to be authentic and veg-focused.
The walls are filled with just as much culture as the food and drink are. “Hinterhof” is named after what Berliners called the inner courtyards of pre-war apartment buildings. A Hinterhof was the spot where people could casually get together with neighbors on evenings and weekends, so the name perfectly captures what Hinterhof brings to Highland Park — a spot to eat, drink, and catch up.
Designed with traditional beer halls and German gathering places in mind, this indoor/outdoor beer garden features large glass walls, picnic tables, and string lights. The 2,100-square-foot beer hall is big enough to fit you and 122 of your friends, without feeling cramped… or spilling beers.
