There’s nothing quite as satisfying as the high you get from a good workout. And nowadays, to get the most out of a killer sweat sesh and reach peak performance, Angelenos are looking to one-stop health and fitness studios to get their workouts and wellness on.
Enter: Upgrade Labs, the world’s first biohacking (read: the practice of altering your biology for optimal performance) health and fitness facility taking workouts and recovery to a whole new level.
Behind Upgrade Labs is Dave Asprey, the brainchild of the Bulletproof empire and the guy who made adding grass-fed butter to coffee the trendy (and healthy) thing to do.
It all started when, during a trek in Tibet, Dave was given tea blended with yak butter, which gave him an immediate boost of energy and clarity, and later inspired his line of buzzworthy brews, MCT oils, and other butter-infused products. Years of research and experiments hacking his own biology later, Dave lost 100 pounds and changed his mental and physical health for the better. He wanted to share his knowledge, state-of-the-art equipment, and technologies to help others do the same, and thus, Upgrade Labs was born.
Referred to by Dave as a “human upgrade center,” the OG Santa Monica and recently-opened Beverly Hills locations feature cutting-edge equipment designed to shorten and maximize your workouts.
Throw out any preconceptions you may have of a standard, no-frills gym. Walking into Upgrade Labs is like stepping into a scene in a futuristic sci-fi movie (think A.I. Artificial Intelligence meets The Matrix). Instead of weight machines and treadmills, you’ll find beaming red lights that decrease inflammation, space-like pods that increase stem cell production, clouds of vaporized liquid nitrogen that boost your immune system, and IV drips filled with vitamins.
But not even the half of it. Want to complete a week’s worth of weightlifting in 15 minutes? Check out the Cheat Machine, a motor-driven device that uses adaptive resistance technology to help build strength and endurance. Then there’s the Cold HIIT, an elliptical-like machine that mimics an intense, 2.5-hour workout in 21 minutes. In need of a major reset? (Same.) Look no further than the Virtual Float Tank, which will launch you into a relaxing, meditative state and help boost your creativity at the same time. Fitt Tip: You can only find the Virtual Float Tank at the SaMo location.
Dave Asprey’s buttery bev has changed the way we drink our favorite morning or afternoon pick-me-up, and now, he’s changing how we work out, recover, and well, live our best lives.
Word on the street is more Upgrade Labs locations are in the works, and we’re here for it. In the meantime, stop by their SaMo and 90210 outposts and hack your way to health.
