When you think of your local corner store, sustainable, vegan products aren’t likely to come to mind. That is, unless you call Venice home and are a hop, skip, and jump away from New Deli — an all-vegan specialty shop that has been redefining the concept of the neighborhood bodega since June 2018.
Matthew Kenny, the man behind New Deli, knows a thing or two about plant-based living. If the name rings a bell, you’re probably familiar with Venice hot spot Plant Food + Wine, where he makes plants celebrities in their own right, or his vegan pizza concept Double Zero.
Thanks to his classical culinary training, extensive travels, and love for the outdoors, Matthew has garnered a reputation for using locally-sourced ingredients to create innovative seasonal menus across a variety of restaurant concepts. A world-renowned chef at the forefront of the vegan movement for more than a decade, he is “crafting the future of food” with his nutritious, sans-meat cuisine served across 17 restaurants globally and counting, not to mention his books, talks, and wellness retreats — all of which are fueled by his passion for sustainable living.
So, instead of meats and dairy, you’ll find New Deli’s shelves stocked with vegan-only fare made by like-minded LA-based companies (think Beyond Meat burgers and sausages, Cocogurt coconut yogurts, Fermenting Fairy coconut milk kefirs, and Misha’s non-dairy cheeses). And because New Deli is a one-stop shop for all things plant-based, you can also take your pick of cruelty-free skin and hair products along with a curated selection of organic wine and beer.
Once you’ve perused the aisles of snacks, you might find yourself getting a little hungry, so take a load off on their patio outlined by plush greenery (notice a theme?) and dig into one of their mouthwatering menu items like a wild fermented seed bagel with house-made cashew cream cheese, smoked carrot lox, dill, and capers or their T-BLAT (tempeh bacon, lettuce, tomato, avocado, and chipotle).
On your way to the beach? They’ve got you covered with to-go salads and wraps prepared daily by their sister cafe Make Out. And while you’re at it, go ahead and grab an oat milk latte (yes, they have a full coffee program, too).
Whether you need to stock up on vegan staples for the week, have a hankering for a satisfying sammie, or are just looking for a solid pick-me-up, take a stroll to New Deli at 2524 Pacific Ave. Open every day from 8am to 8pm, it may just become your and your four-legged friend’s favorite go-to shop — because who doesn’t love a pet-friendly shop?
