A new generation of general stores is bringing back the neighborly feel that’s missing from today’s big-box chains. And LA’s Scout, the go-to iteration in Silver Lake, has taken it a step further serving up healthy, gourmet eats and specialty coffee — all with feel-good charm.
A mere 240-square-feet, Scout may be tiny in size, but its offerings pack a punch. After all, it’s an all-in-one bodega, café, wine market, and gift shop nestled between its sister restaurants Kettle Black and Sawyer.
With floor-to-ceiling shelves displaying locally-made goods, perusing the store is like exploring all the surrounding LA shops. From jam from SQIRL, breads from Friends & Family, and kombucha tea from Better Booch to cookbooks from restaurants like Osteria Mozza and Gjelina and a curated collection of vinyl records from local indie bands, you’ll find everything you need and much more — Scout’s honor.
We’d be remiss if we didn’t mention their café eats. They’ve got an all-day lineup of breakfast items, bowls, sandwiches, and smoothies — whatever you choose, you can’t go wrong. But the ultimate crowd-pleaser is the Breakfast Burrito with scrambled egg, cheddar cheese, bacon, pico de gallo, and avocado wrapped in an organic tortilla (there’s a veggie version, too).
Rounding out the menu must-haves are the filling namesake smoothie and an Americano courtesy of Portland’s Heart Roasters.
Framed by an all-glass, succulent-filled exterior and decked with retro floral wallpaper, brass accents, and modern hexagon tile floors inside, Scout is as inviting as it is ultrahip. Although they’re mainly a to-go spot, you’re welcomed to enjoy their bites, booze, and basics outside on the sidewalk where they have a few tables set up or inside Sawyer next door (where there’s free Wi-Fi).
Living up to its name, Scout has done all the work for you, bringing the best local merch and good-for-you meals under one roof. So, the next time you’re in need of some fresh pasta and sauce to whip up a quick dinner, a bottle of wine (or two) to accompany it, a healthy pick-me-up for the road, or a last-minute gift, Scout has got you covered — proving that good things come in small packages.
