There’s no shortage of races in California, but none channel the West Coast vibes quite like the Surf City Marathon and Half Marathon — a one-of-a-kind race taking over Huntington Beach on February 2, 2020.
Every year, runners from across the US (and abroad) travel to California to kick off the race season at this award-winning course — and it’s not hard to understand why. The popular route is fast, flat, and features sun-soaked Pacific Ocean views that are truly unforgettable.
On race day, you’ll set off from the scenic Pacific Coast Highway, sweating it out on the longest stretch of uninterrupted beachfront on the West Coast. Along the way, you’ll cruise past cliff overhangs, the famous Huntington Beach pier, and the sprawling Bolsa Chica Wetlands. Trust us — you’ll be thankful for the distraction as the miles add up.
Just make sure you save a bit of energy for the home stretch. When you hit Main St., you’ll be greeted by a massive, cheering crowd, and you’ll want to show ’em what you got (and maybe even shave a few seconds off your PR while you’re at it).
Once you cross the finish line, you’ll join your fellow runners in celebrating your incredible feat and hard work at the energy-packed after-party. It’s going down at the “Sand Bar” right on the beach and will be the perfect opportunity to show off your signature surfboard-style finisher medal.
There’s plenty more going on during race weekend, too. On Friday and Saturday, head over to the Active Lifestyle Expo to pick up your race bib, timing chip, and event tee in addition to checking out the local health and fitness vendors (we also hear there will be tons of free samples).
Got pre-race nerves or want to stretch your legs a bit before the main event? Lace up on Saturday morning for the Cowabunga Beach Challenge, a one-mile fun run with friends and family on the sand — there will be complimentary beer for those who participate.
Already stoked for February 2020? Well, we’ve got more reasons to love this iconic beach marathon. Not only is the Surf City Marathon and Half Marathon a Boston Qualifier, but it’s also part of the Beach Cities Challenge, a race series that includes the OC Marathon and the Long Beach Marathon.
No worries if you’re not ready to take on the full or half-marathon. There’s also a 5K race going down that features the same epic views and Cali vibes the classic race is known for.
Oh, and did we mention Surf City lands on Super Bowl Sunday? We can’t think of a better way to earn those wings and nachos. Secure your spot and get to training!
