Vegan ice cream has gotten mainstream enough that its hit the frozen aisles of supermarkets — but that doesn’t always mean the options are good.
If you’re looking for truly delicious vegan ice cream in Los Angeles, look no further than Van Leeuwen Artisan Ice Cream. We love it so much we put it on our list of the best spots for vegan ice cream across the US. And as of September 2018, there’s one more LA neighborhood where you can get some of the best scoops of vegan ice cream around: Silver Lake.
Van Leeuwen started as a NYC ice cream truck back in 2008 and has since landed shops all over The Big Apple and LA. But Van Leeuwen isn’t just any old creamery — they make simple, mouth-watering ice cream using just a handful of fresh ingredients from some of the world’s best artisan producers and farmers.
Feast your eyes on their selection of permanent classic and vegan flavors, or a rotation of specials that live up to the hype (like vegan peanut butter candy crunch). If you consider yourself an ice cream loyalist — don’t worry! They still have fan favorites like mint chip, chocolate chip cookie dough, cookies & cream, and more of the usual suspects. Did we mention they’re all plant-based?
Their vegan flavors are made with a base of housemade cashew milk, organic coconut milk, organic extra virgin coconut oil, cocoa butter, organic cane sugar, and organic carob bean. Besides the awesome ingredients, our favorite part about these delicious creations is they don’t taste vegan — they just taste like really, really good ice cream. You’ll get the rich, creamy, smooth texture of traditional ice cream, without the dairy.
A single or double scoop is never a bad idea, but if you’re feeling adventurous, they also have shakes, sundaes, and cookie sandwiches. The cookies are vegan, too!
Whether you’re plant-based or not, Van Leeuwen should be at the top of your list. If you’re really not feeling vegan ice cream, they have classic flavors — but beware, you may never go back to the classic scoops after you’ve had a taste of the vegan ones. They’re that good.
The Silver Lake shop is open from 12am–12pm daily, but you can also pop into their locations in DTLA, Culver City, or hunt down the truck. And if the Van Leeuwen craving hits but you can’t make it to one of their shops, they also sell pints at Whole Foods and Erewhon.
