Calling all gluten-free Miami locals! We know that dining out when you’ve avoiding gluten isn’t exactly an easy task, but luckily, we know just where you should have your next meal. From grilled cheese sandwiches to superfood salads, cauliflower steaks, and even chocolate-frosted cupcakes, you shouldn’t let that dreaded g-word hold you back from the city’s incredible eats.
So whatever your reason for avoiding gluten, here’s a list of Miami’s restaurants and cafes that are making eating sans gluten a cinch. You can thank us later.
This spot is known as one of the first vegan restaurants in Miami Beach, but look a little deeper and you’ll find a slate of gluten-free items waiting for you to indulge in. They make it simple, too, offering a menu that calls out all of its gluten-free plates with a small sun symbol. We’re never one to turn down the jackfruit platter with braised fennel au gratin, sautéed spinach, quinoa, and roasted potatoes. But if you’ve got a burger on the brain, look out for the Beyond cheeseburger with a GF bun and fries. And a trip to Full Bloom is never complete without treating yourself to the "Mocha Salted Caramel Chocolate Lava Cake" with gelato. Yeah, we could basically eat every meal here for the next month.
There’s a lot we love about Icebox Cafe. The food (gluten-free included) is always top-notch and the flagship location in Miami Beach’s Sunset Harbour is an absolute delight. Plus, the company operates satellite spots inside Miami International Airport, which makes eating while traveling that much more bearable. Most importantly, Icebox makes some of the most creative gluten-free salads we’ve ever tasted. There’s the "Avocado and Seed," packed with pumpkin seeds, pine nuts, arugula, grana padano, and drizzled with a lemon basil vinaigrette, and the tuna niçoise, made with a hard-boiled egg, green beans, cherry tomatoes, fingerling potatoes, niçoise olives, and a mustard vinaigrette. Ready your forks, folks.
Planta in South Beach is where we go for an upscale gluten-free meal. Known for its celebrity clientele (hey, DJ Khaled and Pharrell Williams), you’ll want to start with the "Ahi Watermelon", continue with the "Frenchie" pizza piled with mushrooms, squash, cashew mozzarella, almond parmesan, and truffle vinaigrette on a GF crust. Top it off with a flourless dulce de leche pie with almond crust and coconut cream. We think it goes without saying, but we’ll say it anyways — this place is a gluten-free dream come true.
Two words: gluten-free dessert. Bunnie Cakes, a vegan bakery set up in Wynwood, makes many of its treats free of the g-word. Filled with chocolate chips, layered with fudge, and topped with a bite-sized pink heart, this neighborhood shop whips up plant-based and gluten-free cupcakes, doughnuts, and cakes that you’ll have to taste to believe. Even better, the bakery features an on-site DIY baking studio, where customers can decorate their choice of gluten-free layer cakes or small cupcakes. Fitt Tip: Bunnie Cakes' studio is a perfect spot to host events but make sure to call in advance, it’s known to fill up quickly.
In need of a gluten-free fix in Downtown Miami? Head to Manna Life Food. The restaurant’s menu is filled with colorful bowls made up of all sorts of fresh fruits and vegetables. One of our all-time favorites is the "Southwestern 3 Bean Bowl", which includes sweet corn, chickpeas, black beans, guacamole, greens, and a chimichurri dressing. We reccomend trying the strawberry tramisu or a "Superfood Chocolate Bar" with goji berries and bee pollen. To wash it all down, they’ve got a mean selection of cold-pressed juices, nut mylks, coffee, and tea, too.
Ms. Cheezious is the best example of a local chain doing it right. Situated on Biscayne Blvd. in Miami’s MiMo District, this place is the city’s go-to for a quality grilled cheese sandwich. Best of all, the restaurant can make any of its sandwiches—from smoked turkey with fontina cheese to braised short rib with jack cheese—on gluten-free bread. Fitt Tip: if you can’t make it to MiMo, visit the restaurant’s second location in Coral Gables.
This plant-based restaurant in Wynwood offers a ton of plates that even the pickiest GF diner is sure to love. Some of Plant Miami’s best sellers include cauliflower steak, watermelon caprese, and chocolate pineapple cake with almond crust. Plus, the restaurant is only a few blocks away from the center of Miami’s arts district, so take a walk around the neighborhood when you’ve overindulged.
Finding a quality gluten-free pie is actually pretty easy in Miami. Cue Genuine Pizza in Aventura Mall, which can basically make any pizza safe for gluten-free eaters — Italian sausage, four cheese, and pesto with ricotta included. They also run locations across town (Coconut Grove, the Design District, and Dadeland), making getting your pizza fix a no-brainer, no matter where you are in the city. Fitt Tip: their locations outside Aventura are called Harry’s Pizzeria, but offer the same gluten-free-friendly eats.
Pura Vida in South Beach, Coral Gables, and Edgewater is set on spreading health and happiness. That’s why they’re passionate about serving every type of restaurant-goer — gluten-free included. Here, you can order any wrap on a GF tortilla. There’s also fruit bowls made with honey, coconut, and gluten-free granola, as well as fresh-made smoothies, dragon fruit acai bowls, and wellness shots. The best part is they offer quick and easy delivery (for when you don’t want to move off the couch and a bag of chips for lunch isn’t going to cut it). Eating well has never been easier.
PSA: Just because you’re gluten-free doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy some killer Mexican food. TacoCraft in South Miami features a menu full of creative tacos, most of which are served in handmade masa tortillas. With everything from guacamole and a quesadilla bar to handhelds stuffed to the brim with mushrooms, kale and sweet potatoes, or grilled skirt steak, the hardest part will be deciding what to order. Who said you had to miss out on pasta just because you’re gluten-free? The next time you’re looking for a place to wine and dine, head to Fiola in Coral Gables, where they guarantee you a mouth-watering plate of pasta. Seriously, every pasta dish on their menu has the ability to be made with gluten-free noodles. So go ahead, order up the lobster ravioli or ragu bolognese, you deserve it. But, if you’re up for seafood, they also have a raw bar with all sorts of fresh-from-the-sea selections (hello, Diver Sea Scallops).
For a quick bite that’s both healthy and satisfying, you can’t do much better than this spot founded by Shannon Allen and her husband, former NBA champion Ray Allen. Grown’s endlessly customizable fast-casual menu makes ordering gluten-free a breeze. Build your own salad, or try a signature quinoa bowl topped off with shrimp, free-range chicken, or marinated mushrooms. You can eat well knowing each menu item is made with organic, local, and sustainable ingredients free of GMOs, preservatives, hormones, or processed sugar.
