Any self-respecting BK-based vegan has given both Champs Diner and Screamer’s Pizzeria a late-night visit or two. But three’s company, and the restaurant group behind these plant-based junk food havens opened another cruelty-free eatery in Bushwick in August 2018. Their newest venture, Hartbreakers, features cozy, colorful ’70s vibes and a menu full of comfort food to match.
Champs in Williamsburg is known for its out-of-this-world pancakes, chick’n and waffles, and old-school diner vibes. Screamer’s in Greenpoint makes legendary pies that could please even the most skeptical of cheese-lovers (try their Hawaiian slice — you’ll definitely dig it). Hartbreakers, meanwhile features teased-out cauliflower tater tots, chicken sandwiches made with seitan, salad bowls, and plant-based burgers that have been described as “insanely delicious.”
In addition to their satisfying dishes, Hartbreakers also serves up a humane mission statement as well: “We acknowledge the injustice faced by animals as well as the injustice faced by so many people around the world, including those in our local community,” Champs Empire marketing director Adri Suarez explains. “Creating a safe space and network of allyship for both human and non-human animals is at the center of our identity,” she asserts.
Not only do their meals make you feel good; Hartbreaker’s feel-good message is spot-on, too.
Ready to make your reservation? Hartbreakers is doing incredible, plant-based business at 820 Hart St. in the Bushwick neighborhood of Brooklyn. Need evidence? Peruse the Hartbreakers Instagram account and start salivating. And one thing is for certain: the bright vibes and balance of health food and comfort food ensure that Hartbreakers has a little something for everyone. Their bio, “where health + hedonism collide”, couldn’t sum it up any better.
