Nolita is the perfect neighborhood to spend an afternoon strolling and window shopping. It’s quieter than neighboring SoHo with the most charming blocks and is home to some of the city’s best restaurants. Exploring it all can certainly work up an appetite, and one of the neighborhood’s newest spots is Dez, a colorful oasis on Mulberry between Prince and Spring, aims to nourish.
Top Chef, top quality
Dez, short for “Desert”, is television personality and food blogger Eden Grinshpan’s first restaurant. She’s the Canadian-Israeli host of Top Chef Canada (follow her on Instagram because she has the cutest baby, Ayv) and now the executive chef of her own spot, opened with by CHLOE. co–founder Samantha Wasser. After months of recipe testing, she’s designed a menu perfect for day or night. Cactus and camel accents decorate the gorgeous space, which includes a nook of plants and a long banquette upholstered with a collection of brightly colored vintage Moroccan rugs.
But let’s talk food. Rich with gluten-free, vegan, and vegetarian options, Dez is a place you can bring any group. At brunch time, you’ll definitely want to try the cardamom waffle, topped with lemon butter and maple syrup. For lunch or dinner, split the pink beet hummus served with the freshest fluffiest pita, as tasty as it is Instagrammable. And there are so many tempting drink options. Dez serves carafes of rosé and a rose lemonade. They also brew Devoción coffee (a Columbian brand roasted in Williamsburg), CAP Beauty matcha, and Leaves and Flowers tea from California.
Another must order is the Shawarma Burger, served in a pita with crispy eggplant and tahini. For something lighter, the Sumac Fattoush with kale is the perfect choice: it has tons of veggies, plus pita chips mixed in. And no matter what you’re eating, rest assured that Dez uses organic, seasonal, and local ingredients whenever possible.
The Ultimate Cooldown
For New York’s hottest days, Dez has a special treat — a soft serve of the month to cool you down. This month, it’s Strawberry and Peanut Butter Bamba. And just so you know: Bamba are a crunchy peanut-flavored Israeli snack food and they’re totally addictive (and sold at Trader Joe’s). What more could you want? For all Middle Eastern cravings, savory or sweet, Dez is the place.
