You might be under the impression that farm-to-table and locally-sourced eats are hard to come by in a city that’s known for cheesesteaks and soft pretzels. Well, Philly, think again.
Here at Fitt, we know that healthy means something different to everyone. That’s why we put together your go-to guide of the most nutritious (and delicious) spots to satisfy all your cravings. Searching for vegan options? Gluten-free? Organic? All of the above? Look no further — we’ve got you covered.
Vegan restaurants don’t typically include menu items like chicken, burgers, and even Philly cheesesteaks, but HipCityVeg knows what’s up. Their plant-based favorites like the Classic Ziggy Burger and Jerk Chick’n Caesar Salad will have your taste buds thanking you (and possibly a little confused). Find these local, organic, non-GMO soy ingredients in Center City, Rittenhouse Square, and University City, plus a seasonal booth at Spruce Street Harbor Park.
Tucked away on Locust St. in Center City, Vedge prides itself on being a restaurant for anyone and everyone — omnivores, vegetarians, vegans, and carnivores alike. The menu boasts exclusive veggie combinations like the Wood Roasted Carrot with pumpernickel and garbanzos, and Eggplant Braciole with Italian salsa verde. Our mouths are watering just thinking about it.
Open for every meal of the day, Front Street Cafe serves their Fishtown neighbors only the best farm-to-table, locally-sourced, organic cuisine. If you’re there in the morning, test out the Quinoa Oat Porridge. And you can always circle back and have the Chipotle Turkey Burger for lunch or the Tostada Grain Bowl for dinner. Are you drooling yet?
This Mediterranean BYOB is one of Rittenhouse’s favorites and a must for healthy eaters everywhere. Audrey Claire serves up delectable dishes like the spicy hummus, smoked salmon, and mesclun flatbread with tahini vinaigrette. No? How about maple brined pork chop with wild boar bacon, candied dates, and gorgonzola-granny smith apple butter. Need we go on?
Authentic Puerto Rican recipes meet Philly attitude in this vegan and gluten-free-friendly Rittenhouse eatery. If the Spanish meatballs, buffalo cauliflower tacos, and Quinoa Crab Cakes don’t have you coming back for more (they will), don’t forget to check out the cocktail menu. Salted Grapefruit Margarita or Puerto Rican Punch, anyone?
This Washington Square staple brings some of the freshest, most delightful food you can find in Philadelphia to the table. Whether it’s the “Chicken Fried” Kennett Square Mushrooms with "Magic Miso Sauce" or the divine Seared New England Scallops with sweet peas, you just can’t go wrong. Pull up a patterned chair in the dining room or enjoy in the garden. Fitt Tip: reservations are never a bad idea at this popular spot.
With locations popping up all over the city, Sweetgreen is hard to ignore. And why would you want to, anyway? We’ve deemed this Philly local favorite ‘salad paradise’. All you have to do is walk through the doors and grab your salad to go.
Burger joints get a bad rap in the health-conscious community. But we know a place right on Walnut St. that will satisfy your greasy cravings without compromising your healthy standards. Bareburger’s menu offers organic protein choices such as black bean, duck, chicken, falafel, turkey, and even wild boar. Pick from various buns (or opt for something greener), fresh toppings, and homemade sauce to make one incredible meal. Oh, and treat yourself to one of their famous milkshakes while you’re there. You deserve it.
The organic, gluten-free, plant-based menu at P.S. & Co. changes depending on the availability of local ingredients — so you know it’s the real deal. This cozy and nutrient-driven Rittenhouse cafe isn’t just adorable, they make everything from scratch, too. Bonus: they’re a BYO cocktail-type joint, so don’t forget a stop at the liquor store on your way over.
Foodies everywhere adore Real Food Eatery because at these Rittenhouse, Center City, and Wynnefield Heights shops, the customers are in control of their own meal. Start by picking between a variety of salad and rice bowls. If you’re extra #hangry, design a full plate by choosing an entrée over a green or grain with two unique sides — like kale slaw with feta or shredded roasted Brussels sprouts. With their all-natural, 100% gluten-free options, this place is the realest.
