Winter is coming, which means too many “Game of Thrones” memes, and unfortunately, weather that can be too cold for our evening runs. But thankfully, Philly is making it easier than ever to take our fitness routines indoors thanks to all these brand new fitness spots.
Whether spinning classes are your jam or you’re looking to raise the barre (see what we did there?), you’re destined to find everything you need at these pristine fitness joints.
For years, us Philadelphians had to trek to NYC to attend the popular SLT Megaformer workouts. But now, we can enjoy the 50-minute, 400 to 600 calorie-burning workout in the comforts of our own city (now we can get abs like Sofia Vergara!). The studio is set to open in Rittenhouse this spring. But we’ll be planking away to prepare in the meantime.
Fact: You’re never unhappy on a trampoline. If you’ve been wishing that your workouts could incorporate the fantastic fun of childhood trampoline bouncing, look no further than Freehouse. While their new South Street West studio also features reformers for Pilates-style “fun”, we just want to jump. In the High Flyer classes, you’ll be bouncing off calories on your own mini trampoline set to the beats of Ariana Grande and Bruno Mars. Could there be anything better? Only if Bruno Mars was bouncing next to you. Where you at, Bruno?
For those of us out in the ‘burbs that still want an intense spinning workout, CycleBar in Exton will get your heart rate up. Even better, your first 30-minute ride is free, so there’s no excuse not to cinch those clip-in spinning shoes tight and get moving. This cycling studio is full of character, offering classes like Throwback Thursday and Concert Rides set to the tunes of your favorite pop stars. Burning calories has never been this fun.
We’ve been waiting forever for [solidcore] to make its way to Philadelphia. The 50-minute Pilates-based high-intensity, low-impact classes make it easy to squeeze in a sweat sesh when your schedule is slammed. And with a convenient Center City location, it’s never been easier to keep your six-pack through the winter.
Fishtown is quickly becoming a hub for the health and fitness-obsessed thanks to healthy eats like Front Street Cafe and amazing fitness spots like Grace & Glory Yoga. The only thing we were really missing was a place to pick up snazzy workout clothes…until now! Thankfully, Fishtown is finally getting a lululemon store, but it won’t be just any lululemon. This one will be a concept store featuring a community hub for all Fishtown’s health and wellness community to gather. Mark your calendar for the grand opening on November 25. Word on the street is there will be an outdoor workout and other festivities to celebrate the occasion.
Okay, when Ardmore opened a SoulCycle studio, we were happy for them, but also a little (read: insanely) jealous. We dreamed of the day Center City would have its very own outpost of the famed celebrity-obsessed workout (we’re looking at you, Jake Gyllenhaal). And that day has finally come. The new studio is slated to open late fall in Rittenhouse, and the best part? It’s right next to our favorite healthy dining option, honeygrow. We’re counting down the days ‘til we clip in to this cardio party.
The awesome part about Fit Academy is that they bring all the best types of workouts together for a killer burn sure to get the endorphins pumping. From step workouts to kettlebell reps and even yoga-for-athletes, Fit Academy has long been a mainstay in the Philly meet-up fitness scene (you’ve probably seen them hustling up the Rocky Steps). Now, Fit Academy plans to transition its outdoor workouts to a brick-and-mortar location in Brewerytown this year. Get ready to drop and give us 20!
Everyone from Kelly Ripa to Michael Phelps is getting in on the barre workout trend, and naturally, we want in too. Thankfully, chain barre studio Barre3 is finally making its long-awaited debut in Philly. They’ve been getting us super stoked with pop-up classes at Anthropologie and the Comcast Center, but we couldn’t be more excited for their new space to open. Until then, we’ll just continue awkwardly doing our pliés on the Broad Street Line.
UniteFitness is like the Happy Meal of the workout world. You get it all: Cardio intervals, resistance bands, weight training, and a yoga session to finish off each class. The studio has garnered quite a following at its 12th Street location, and now, those of us in Rittenhouse can join in on the fun this November. Fitt Tip: The new location is perfect for a post-workout treat at Shake Shack, a sushi burrito at Hai Street Kitchen, or even a delicious salad at sweetgreen. November has never felt this good.
City Fitness’s amazing new Fishtown gym. And we know it will have everything from a juice bar to a spinning studio. Remember what we said about Fishtown being the latest mecca for the fitness-obsessed? Well, this new gym addition is the latest addition to the fitness revolution. We might even be looking forward to winter this year. Fitt Tip: You even have a chance to meet the City Fitness team at The Shakeout run on Nov. 13th.We’ve been closely following all the opening events for
Fans of Wake Up Yoga’s Fairmount and South Philly locations will jump for joy (or forward fold) for this news: Wake Up Yoga Rittenhouse is officially open for business. Gems at this new location include classes like Sunrise Flow and Heart & SoulFlow, so you know you’ll be getting a balanced, reinvigorating sequence every time you step on your mat.
We’ll keep you up to date on all things health, fitness and local food in Philadelphia.
