Remember the good old days when the sound of the ice cream truck conjured feelings of pure joy? But now your diet’s gone and squashed the fun.
Now that you’ve gone vegan, that familiar melody can feel more like a three-note taunt than comforting nostalgia. And, since Mister Softee’s menu offerings haven’t quite reached the point of plant-based soft-serve, we’re here to tell you the city of Philly makes it easy to never feel deprived again. So, let’s all scream for ice cream with these awesome vegan Philly options!
Little Baby’s Ice Cream
Resist the urge to smell the cheesy goodness of Pizza Brain next door as you mosey into Little Baby’s Ice Cream shop for a delicious vegan treat. This Fishtown staple has classic ice cream flavors, like chocolate cookie dough and chocolate speculoos (two scoops, please), but there’s also something for the vegan daredevils, like balsamic banana and kale smoothie. Kale yeah!
We’re about to blow your minds with this rolled ice cream knowledge. When Sweet Charlie’s stumbled onto the ice cream scene last year with their beautiful Thai rolled ice cream, we shed a tear lamenting the fact that we would never be able to try the hottest ice cream trend. But (we hope you’re sitting down for this), they have a vegan base option! Mix yours with blueberries, almonds, and strawberries, and you’ve got one delicious, Instagram-worthy vegan treat.
When we said “the good old days,” we didn’t mean the 1800s. But now that we think about it, that’s when ice cream was new — therefore blowing people’s minds.! This vintage-styled ice cream shop has been ranked some of the best ice cream in America, and we still blows our minds. Thankfully, there are vegan options too, like chocolate and vanilla. Even the chocolate syrup and whipped coconut cream are dairy-free. Sign us up for 12 sides of that!
Govinda’s Gourmet Vegetarian
If you’re craving some vegan ice cream, why not turn it into an entire vegan dinner? At this Midtown vegetarian mainstay, you can prepare your stomach for ice cream by chowing down on eggplant parm and fried polenta. Just make sure you save room for some of the best vegan ice cream in Philly.
We’ve told you a million times that HipCityVeg in Rittenhouse is a vegan’s paradise. But, we bet you didn’t think this would be your next ice cream stop, did you? For a healthier take on frozen dessert, order up the banana whip. Or hey, just go straight for the milkshake—there’s no judgment here.
When we’re craving a veggie cheesesteak wrap or a delicious smoothie, we make the trek to Soy Café in Northern Liberties. But on those sunny Philly days, we can’t help but order the delicious vegan ice cream in chocolate and vanilla flavors. Fitt Tip: Order the vegan espresso milkshake for a soy-based treat on the go. Even your dairy-loving friends will be jealous.
In the words of Oprah, everybody gets a vegan milkshake! Well, maybe she didn’t say exactly that, but if she was at this South Philly favorite, she would have said it loud and proud! For our plant-based beauties out there, order up the vegan strawberry vanilla shake, or hey, go on-trend with the vegan salted avocado. (No, we’re not avo-kidding you.)
We remember our summer in Rome like it was yesterday—gelato every day, pizza every night, and tripping over way too many cobblestones. While we can’t scrounge up the money to go to Italy every weekend, we can make our way to this Midtown gelato shop for some delicious vegan dark chocolate sorbetto. We’ll just park our gondola up front.
Rittenhouse’s V Street brings vegan street food to the masses on the regular. It’s one of our favorite spots for happy hour BUT imagine how much happier we got when we realized they had rotating vegan soft serve?! If you see the purple sweet potato ice cream on the menu, run, don’t walk, to this spot with a spoon ready!
Ok, technically, these are vegan shakes, but one sip will have you throwing technicalities out the window. These creamy tehina shakes from vegan falafel paradise, Goldie, come in flavors like Turkish coffee, mint chocolate, and banana and will satisfy the sweet tooth of vegans and omnivores alike! Fitt Tip: if they happen to have some of their #offmenu baklava available, crumble it over your shake. Thank us later.
Charlie was a sinner.
Don’t worry, this Midtown spot is for saints and sinners alike. And, from drinks to dessert, the entire menu is completely vegan. They’ve got a nice selection of plant-based sorbets on their dessert menu. But, we’ve gotta say, our favorite ice cold option is the Buddy Holiday Milkshake. Spiced rum, cherry liqueur, vanilla bean ice cream, almond cookie? Yes, please.
Lil’ Pop Shop
If you prefer your vegan treat on a stick, not by the scoop, you’re in luck. Lil’ Pop Shop is Rittenhouse and West Philly’s cutest spot to snag a sweet when you’re feeling the heat. With a regular lineup of non-dairy popsicles ranging from avocado coconut to chai latte, there’s no better way to cool off than with a lil’ pop!
Want to know the ultimate life hack? Vegan soft-serve delivered right to your door. Yup, this dream is a reality thanks to Scoop DeVille, Center City’s mecca of mouth-watering frozen treats. And since they’ve started offering Tofutti soft-serve and dairy-free sorbet, they’ve garnered a whole new batch of vegan fans. With gluten-free toppings and a number of mix-ins, you can customize your creation and have it dropped off at your door. Delish.
Kuriimii Soft Serve
Even your tastebuds deserve a vacation now and then. Chinatown’s Kuriimii is ready to take you on a trip to paradise with their vegan pineapple soft-serve. Top your treat with a number of fresh fruits, crunchy coconut, and other funky toppings (did you know Fruity Pebbles are vegan? You’re welcome.)
You might not come to this vegan steak shop for the ice cream, but we bet you’ll stick around for a scoop (or two). You can grab this dairy-free delight by the half-pint and, with flavors like lucky charm, chocolate AF, cherry cheesecake bomb, and cookies, we can see why they branded it Cool Kid Ice Cream.
Sweet Freedom Bakery
We’ll admit, we first waltzed into Sweet Freedom on South St. looking for some gluten-free cupcakes. But when we realized they were now offering vegan, gluten-free ice cream sandwiches that didn’t suck, we were all in. Fitt Tip: this bakery is just down the street from Freehouse Fitness, in case you need to refuel after a rebounder class!
