It doesn’t take much to break a sweat in Phoenix, but with a health and fitness scene that’s fast expanding, you can now count on more than just the sun to make you perspire. Not only that, the city is quickly becoming a hotbed for healthy eats, making it easier than ever to get your hands on delicious guilt-free grub. And to help you keep your finger on the pulse, we’ve rounded up all the best new spots in the Valley of the Sun to get your blood pumping and grab some good-for-you post-workout fuel.
This Utah-based health and fitness club is expanding — quickly! VASA Fitness celebrated more than the dawn of 2019 on New Year’s Eve, opening their doors in both Chandler and Phoenix on December 31. The community-driven fitness center offers a limitless variety of amenities, equipment, and classes, so there’s no excuse to skip a workout (or slack on that resolution). And when you need a little extra motivation, VASA’s expert instructors will be there to cheer you on and help make sure you’re hitting your fitness goals.
This top-rated Flagstaff-based vegan cafe has been dishing out 100% plant-based, organic, scratch-made meals in Phoenix since November, and we’ve been addicted ever since. Even better, this welcome addition serves breakfast and lunch foods all day long, so stop in and feast your eyes (and your stomach) on an eclectic menu ranging from smoothies, acai bowls, and on-tap kombucha to nachos, pho, and falafel burgers.
The Churchill in Downtown Phoenix is a whole new kind of marketplace. Home to 10 locally-owned businesses focused on community, creativity, and collaboration, rather than competition, this buzzing destination is one of the most unique places in the city (it’s crafted completely of repurposed shipping containers). And here, you’ll find a vegan-friendly pizza shop, a superfood smoothie haven (Foxy Fruit Bowls), and weekly fitness classes in the courtyard, so you can get your clean eats fix and a solid sweat all in one stop. Keep an eye out — we’ve got a feeling they’ll be adding plenty more health-conscious members throughout the year.
This boutique fitness concept combines three essential elements in one hardcore, 60-minute session. And now, you don’t have to live in Scottsdale to get in on the action — SPENGA officially opened a new studio in Chandler on January 9, bringing it’s high-intensity workout experience to the neighborhood. These sweat sessions are no walk in the park, either. Each class mixes cycling, HIIT, and yoga — squeezing cardiovascular, strength, and flexibility training into a workout that will get every muscle in your body burning.
The only thing better than Mexican food is quick, organic, healthy, Mexican food — and Tocaya Organica has that covered. Luckily, you won’t have to plan a trip to Southern California to get a taste of these tasty meals because the fast casual just expanded to Scottsdale! The cafe offers gluten-free and plant-based options, as well as grass-fed, sustainably-sourced meat choices for the health-conscious carnivores out there. So go ahead a bring the whole crew — they’ll all find something delicious on the menu.
If you’re looking for a cozy place to relax, listen to live tunes, and drink some killer cocktails or coffee, then make your way to JOJO Coffeehouse. The musician-owned coffee bar and restaurant featuring local artists, farm-fresh food, and house-roasted coffee opened in December in Old Town Scottsdale, so consider your weekend plans secured.
Cool workout spots and healthy eateries seem to be popping up everywhere in Arcadia, and Remedy Pilates & Barre is the latest to join the neighborhood. The Scottsdale-based studio opened their new space in October, offering area residents tons of weekly Pilates, barre, HIIT, TRX, and recovery classes to start the year off right.
If you’ve been to a CorePower Yoga studio, then you already know there’s a good reason this fitness powerhouse is so renowned. And since Phoenix just can’t get enough, the national chain has announced it’s opening its sixth studio in The Copper State in North Scottsdale on February 1. Just make sure you don’t miss the grand opening — they plan to offer a free class along with discounts to The Westin Kierland Resort & Spa restaurants Nellie Cashman’s Monday Club Café and Brittlebush Bar & Grill.
