When it comes to working out, some people jump out of bed with a burning desire to break a sweat. They can’t start the day until they’re drenched in sweat (and showered, we hope!).
Then there’s another group of morning worker-outers who have to hit the gym first thing in the morning. Otherwise, they won’t go at all.
Either way, if you count yourself among the group of gym-goers who arrive for the first class of the day, have we got a treat for you. It’s the rundown on the places in Pittsburgh catering morning people. Hit these 13 places to break a sweat before the sun comes up.
6:00am. It’s pretty apparent what MÜV is gonna have you do at 6am. Move! You won’t be jumping or flailing around for no reason though. No, MÜV Integrated Physical Culture has a method for their movement. They believe in whole-body wellness, achieved through mobility enhancement, nourishment awareness, and skill progression. And their three classes drive those ideals home. Hit the agility ladder and medicine balls at speed, hang from the TRX suspension or swing a kettlebell at form, or stretch out and find balance in restore.
6:00am. Chris Anthony stands behind a strong statement. Her unique, full-body fitness class names itself the hardest 60 minutes in Pittsburgh. And her students agree. The team-oriented training at Chris Anthony Fitness starts at 6am sharp. And you know what’s great? Yesterday’s 6am will be nothing like today’s or tomorrow’s 6am. It’s an original scheme to keep exercise fun, and to develop strength and cardiovascular endurance.
5:30am. If you’re west of the city, you’re the last Pittsburghers to see the sun rise. But that doesn’t mean you’re missing out. Break a sweat at this Fusion workout, an intense, fun-filled hour of HIIT, at Umberger Performance in Robinson. It starts at 5:30am and exercisers from intermediate to advanced backgrounds are encouraged to attend. What does that mean though? It means the pros at Umberger can turn the intensity up or down based on where you’re at. It’s that sort of dedication to strength and weight loss results that will have you springing out of bed before your alarm goes off.
5:30am. Waking up early ain’t easy. And hitting the snooze button might seem more appealing than hitting the heavy bag at 6am. Luckily, you’ve got the boxing trainers at Shape Training to show you the ropes and help you start the day off right in front of your own 100lb punching bag. You’ll be taught all the combinations, moves, and skills on your way to a strong core and conquering killer cardio. After class at Shape, you’ll walk out the door to start your day with the confidence of Muhammad Ali.
5:00am. Don’t sleep on Orangetheory, because they’re always up early. They kick off their first Orange 60 class promptly at 5am. If you don’t know, Orangetheory Fitness is truly unlike any other exercise studio in Pittsburgh. They’re cranking out 60-minute workouts designed to be high energy, and more importantly, help you lose weight. They’ve developed the program around three components – heart-rate-monitored treadmill interval training (that’s cool), indoor rowing, and blocks of weight training. Put it all together and you’ve got what they call the Orange Effect – Calorie burns. Energy. Visible toning. Results.
6:15am. If you’re looking for something “easy like Sunday morning”, try water aerobics. At Steel Revolution’s Early Bird Spin, they believe in a challenging, powerful 45 minutes of spinning. Bright and early (6:15am), three days per week. If hard work and ‘getting it done’ is what you’re about, you’ll love this spinning-meets-weight training-meets-dance party. This eye-opening calorie burn will energize you more than the first cup of coffee!
5:30am. Remember the days where you would be in the club until the sun comes up? Well, now you can do so in a much healthier way. At Club Cycle’s 5:30am Early Bird Spin, you’ll spend 45 minutes burning calories while grooving to the beat. A live DJ even gets out of bed to mix music videos of all your favorite artists. It’s an intense workout and intense fun. The instructors (and DJ) will lead you in a cycling experience that will energize your body and your mind. Oh, and get you dancing.
6:15am. At Amazing Yoga, they say you’re one class away from a good mood. So why not start out your day right? All you’ll need is a mat, a breath of fresh air, and clear intention. And once you’ve taken a 60-90 minute 6:15am Power Vinyasa class, you’ll intend to come back again and again. It’s open to all levels, so come as you are, no matter where you are in your practice (or what you look like whenever you roll out of bed).
5:45am. Hit 26 poses, 2 breathing exercises, 90 minutes, 6 days per week, first thing in the morning. Welp, there you have it! It’s with that sort of straightforwardness and simplicity that Bikram Yoga Pittsburgh has built their practice. BYP says their class is “the original hot yoga”. Their traditional Bikram class, starting early in the morning, sticks to the 26 pose (Asana) series – the cornerstone of traditional and modern yoga. Come ready to sweat in this union of mind, body, and spirit.
6:00am. For those looking for a boost to start the day, you may want to try South Hills Power Yoga’s 6am class, open to all levels. They teach an inspired power yoga for those wishing to live more fully, laugh more often, and love more deeply. That’s just how they flow. And in this heated room, you’ll be taken through a challenging, body-minded progression that’ll leave you drenched in sweat and leaving the studio with a pep in your step.
5:30am. CrossFitters know a thing or two about getting up early. But that doesn’t mean they’re taking their workout at half-speed, going through the motions while rubbing sleep out of their eyes. At CrossFit Athletics in South Side, dynamic stretching for the workout starts promptly at 5:30am. And if you miss the stretch, you’ll have to wait until the next class. They’re not budging on that, and serious about their workouts. That’s what has built such a healthy, strong, and supportive community at CFA. The type of community that makes sure you’ll never miss another workout.
5:30am. CrossFit Mt. Lebanon is dedicated to your progress as an athlete and as a human. Each and every weekday morning, the coaches at this box are bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, taking initiative for each and every CrossFitter’s personal health and fitness. Every challenge a typical day can throw at you will seem like a piece of cake after starting your day with an invigorating 5:30am WOD filled with functional movements, sweaty high-fives, and results that show.
5:30am. Geez, these CrossFitters must be early birds! All around the city they’re up and in the gym super early. Arsenal Strength in Lawrenceville is no exception. We can understand, however, that sometimes you’re not “fully awake” at that hour. That’s where the coaches at Arsenal step in. Each class will begin with a warm-up, then a strength and technique session to run through everything you’ll need to know to complete the WOD. From there, routine ends, training wheels come off, and you’re free to stomp the workout before seizing the day.
We’ll keep you up to date on all things health, fitness and local food in Pittsburgh.
