Walking Duquesne’s hill of a campus can be a workout in its own right, but what if you’re looking for more?
The answer: Duquesne has it. And not just your standard weight room or treadmill. We’re talking team sports, action adventure, bicycling, and even wiffle ball.
Check out the organizations and clubs where you can make friends, get in the game, and most importantly, be active!
Stop reminiscing in the glory days of your former sport. Get back in the game with a wide offering of intramural sports. Think about playing basketball, flag football, soccer, volleyball, or street hockey to stay in shape or to run the table in the tournament. It’s not just for former athletes, though. All students of all skill levels are invited to sign‐up for a league whether they have a time or not. Be sure to field a team for the semester’s dodgeball, kickball, or wiffle ball tournaments too!
Being active isn’t hard at Duquesne with the Power Center and even just walking the hills of campus. Sometimes you gotta get out of your concrete jungle. That’s where the Outdoor Adventure Series steps in. They offer you – you guessed it – adventure! Whitewater rafting, paintball, caving, climbing, skiing and snowboarding, you name it. And being a member means that you get to go forth and experience these for a significantly reduced cost. Buy your ticket for the next adventure at the Union Information Desk.
Are you a hungry competitor and skilled athlete? Try a club sport at Duquesne. While they’re not officially affiliated with university athletics, you’ll be asked to uphold the same organizational and athletic standards as the Dukes. DU offers baseball, equestrian, ice hockey, roller hockey, tennis, men’s rowing, rugby, and volleyball, and golf within the club system.
With bike lanes popping up all over Pittsburgh, car-less Duquesne students now have avenues for travel around the burgh. The Duquesne Bicycle Club takes it further than just commuting, though. They organize road riding, mountain biking, bicycle rentals, and preach the bicycling as the most fun you can have on two wheels.
So. Many. Classes. If you go to Duquesne, you probably know that the Power Center is the gym. Sure, they have dumbbells and machines and cardio equipment. But what you really need to take advantage of is the huge selection of group fitness classes to choose from. And with so much variety, there’s definitely going to be one that suits you. If you’re all about the party scene, try Turbokick – intervals and endurance training set to motivating music. If you’re thinking something more primal, try the Warrior Series – the ultimate functional fitness class with tire flips, battle ropes, and box jumps. These classes have all that and more…and they’re all free with a DUQ ID.
We’ll keep you up to date on all things health, fitness and local food in Pittsburgh.
