When thinking of any holiday, most of us imagine massive feasts, festive decorations, or clinking drinks.
To which we say, right on! Who doesn’t love a little holiday hoopla from time to time? We sure do. But we’re also fans of balancing an all-you-can-eat and drink celebration with some calorie burning activities. If not for any other reason than to feel better about the epic amounts of food and booze we’re sure to consume.
With that in mind, maybe it’s time to consider a new tradition. One that adds an element of, dare we say, sweat to the mix. That’s right, gang. Lace up your running shoes, and get to turkey trotting, jingle belling, even running in your delicates. Here are 5 holiday-themed races that will help every Pittsburgher sweat and celebrate in style.
Ah, Valentine’s Day. Flowers, chocolate, wine, dine, underwear…Wait, what? That’s right. It’s the Burgh’s hottest new race in the coldest time of year. Even colder/hotter considering that you’ll be running a mile in your underwear (depends on how you look at it). It’s not crazy. It’s for charity. Cupid’s Undie Run benefits the Children’s Tumor Foundation. 2016’s sprint starts and ends at McFadden’s on the North Shore, meaning you and your PG-13 wardrobe can warm up with a post-race drink.
Start the 4th of July with a boom. The Brentwood Firecracker 5k is all about the red, white, and blue. And when you run, you’re supporting our troops and vets through the Disabled Veterans charity. Walkers and runners are invited to compete on Brownsville Road by Brentwood Towne Square – kicking off the Independence Day celebrations, parade, refreshments, and more!
As sure as pumpkin pie at Thanksgiving, the annual Turkey Trot is run on the North Shore Thanksgiving morning. Gear up for your long day of giving thanks (you know…eating) by participating in any 3 distances of the Trot: 1-Mile Family Fun Run/Walk, 5k Turkey Trot, or 5-Mile Turkey Trot. All proceeds go to YMCA’s programs to help those who struggle to put food on the table and participants are asked to bring a non-perishable food donation. Let’s see you be fast before you feast.
The “Merriest 5k of the Year” could possibly be the itchiest, scratchiest, and ugliest run of the year. That’s because it’s the annual Ugly Sweater Run on Pittsburgh’s North Shore. Get your ugliest holiday sweater out of the mothballs for 3 miles of festive fun. Sign up and you’ll be treated to photo stations, games, and holiday music from your favorite crooners. Even better, the holiday-themed stations at every mile of the race don’t offer water. They pass you HOT CHOCOLATE! Stick around after you’ve crossed the finish line. There’s an award for “best” sweater, best pet attire, and best mustache or beard, real or fake!
Who’s feeling festive? Dust off your Santa hat, tie bells to your shoes, and deck yourself in holiday-themed attire from head to mistletoe. The Jingle Bell Run/Walk is held at Heinz Field to the tune of a 1-mile sprint, 5k run/walk, and even a Tinsel Trot for kids under 11. And what’s awesome about this race (other than everyone’s musical shoes) is that it raises funds to find a cure for arthritis. ‘Tis the season to join a team, mingle and jingle, and run for a great cause.
We’ll keep you up to date on all things health, fitness and local food in Pittsburgh.
