It wasn’t too long ago that a 27,000-square-foot facility called ASCEND somehow found space in the the historic (and crowded) South Side. The climbing gym—with massive crags and bouldering features, in-house fitness classes, and the ever-popular community yoga class, Big Free Yoga—quickly established itself in the hearts of Pittsburgh’s climbing community.
Think they’ve topped out? Nope. They’re going even bigger, announcing plans to break ground on a second space in Bridgeville.
Joining the rapidly-developing, mixed-use development Newbury Market, ASCEND 2.0 aims to be open by 2020.
So, what drew them to South Fayette, right off I-79? The headroom. ASCEND has aspirations to build one of the tallest climbing walls in Pittsburgh for top-roping and lead climbing — something they wish their bouldering-centric flagship gym had more of.
However, they’re not ditching what got them here. You’ll still have crags for bouldering, fitness classes to supplement your climbing, popular yoga classes, and a strong community presence. But at their new space, you can count on more events, more hospitality, and more room for just about everything — this gym is going to be a behemoth.
Naturally, it will take some time to get this all in place, and there are sure to be more updates along the way. Stay tuned with Fitt for all the latest news, and if you haven’t already, spend a day at ASCEND’s South Side spot, tucked away a few blocks from Carson St. at 2141 Mary St.
