There’s no better way to start the morning than with a cup of freshly-brewed coffee. And while Pittsburgh’s coffee scene is already one of the best, we’re always looking for new spots to try on our search for the perfect cup. Enter: KLVN Coffee Lab.
Need a little boost to get through your week? KLVN (pronounced Kelvin) has your back. The brand-new cafe in Larimer is now open, and trust us — you’re gonna wanna get there ASAP.
If you’re into single-origin roasts with a richer, finer quality than your average drip coffee, then KLVN is guaranteed to be your next go-to spot. Sourced from a small network of boutique importers, all coffees are roasted and brewed with care in-house. In fact, you can watch the whole process go down right from your spot at the bar.
As a minimally-styled space with an industrial feel, the cafe is just as inviting as the coffee itself. Take in the mellow music and natural lighting over an espresso so unique that it’ll keep you coming back for more.
Owners Will Humphrey and Jeff Sloan crossed paths on the West Coast and put in the work as commercial coffee roasters before opening the Cali-inspired storefront in Larimer. Boasting “powerful crystal vibes”, the two teamed up to incorporate Sloan’s coastal upbringing and influences into the mix.
The result? A space designed for both conversation and contemplation, decked out in soft pastels and bright whites, post-modern furniture, and lush greenery for days.
Aside from the airy, philosophy- and art-inspired space, the methods used for coffee sourcing and roasting are entirely unique to KLVN.
“We source the sweetest brightest, cleanest coffees in the region”, Humphrey said. “If you love coffee, and you're excited to learn the story about where your coffee came from, and you want it to taste like the place it came from, then we have something to offer you”.
KLVN’s blends are meticulously roasted so they retain the flavor from wherever they’re arriving from, be it Ethiopia or Burundi. While most are used to their usual cup of joe tasting bitter and dark, Will describes many of KLVN’s blends as surprising, beautiful, and even sweet.
Once you take a sip of what the coffee lab’s brewing (Sloan suggests the cold brew old fashioned with angostura bitters, clove, and orange peel or the Highline blend) you won’t be able to get enough. Luckily, you can have KLVN delivered straight to your own kitchen, too. Sign up for a subscription service to receive a weekly rotating list of fresh roasts handpicked by the baristas themselves — you’re sure to receive only the best.
The coffee connoisseurs at KLVN are pouring up premium batches seven days a week. And there’s simply no better place to fuel your java addiction or get inspired. Don’t believe us? Head to Hamilton Ave. in Larimer to get a taste of their one-of-a-kind offerings for yourself.
